Luisa Duarte
(Caracas, 1959)
Is a Venezuelan American multidisciplinary artist based in Houston, Texas. With a B.A. in Architecture, her work is deeply informed by architectural sensibilities, which are evident across her diverse body of work. Since relocating to the United States in 2003, Duarte has pursued independent art studies at various institutions, including The Southwest School of Arts in San Antonio, the Glassell School of Art, Art League Houston, and the Watercolor Art Society of Houston.
Duarte has gained recognition for her distinct style, characterized by sharp-edged shapes and a dynamic range that spans composed monotypes to vibrant paintings. Her art thoughtfully explores themes of boundaries, fragility, and the interplay between personal and public spaces.
She has held residencies at the Asia Society Texas Center and P.A.C. Art Residency, and is currently a member of the Throughline Collective in Houston. In 2019 Duarte was honored with the 2019 “Cities Initiative Grant” through the Houston Arts Alliance. In 2022, she was featured in the exhibition “Texas Artists: Women of Abstraction” at the Art Museum of South Texas in Corpus Christi.
I am a Houston-based visual artist who draws inspiration from my own eclectic sources of interest and experience. Having left my native Venezuela to live in the U.S., I find that these two worlds, and a diverse blend of cultures, have shaped who I am, and have enriched my understanding of what constitutes ‘home.’
A vague sense of displacement, and, at times, an underlying yearning to ‘belong,’ leads me to create imaginary spaces that appear to straddle multiple worlds, perspectives and forms. Throughout my upbringing, I was widely exposed to contemporary non-figurative art during a time when the Latin American geometrical abstraction, constructivism and kinetic art movements were at their peak. This aesthetic, and its push to create new ‘Utopian’ cultural spaces in opposition to mainstream politics and culture, loosely informed my professional practice as an architect, and, continues to influence my practice as a visual artist today.
The impetus for my work is a desire to seek beauty and restore a personal sense of order and harmony to a habitat that can be as unpredictable as it is chaotic, whether that tension renders itself visible in the work, or whether it is implied, lying just beneath the surface. In these complex geometrical systems, objects intersect, merge and collide, producing negative spaces that call the viewer to attention. In some cases, the almost imperceptibly off-kilter placement of geometrical elements within a composition speaks to my emphasis on relationships - the objects always exist in relationship to each other.
Over the years, my relationship to the work has evolved from pure explorations of abstract form and color, to a more formal development of monochromatic ‘scapes’ that reduce geometrical elements to their minimum expression, both in palette and form, and to highly dynamic and complex digital works that reflect a more complex visual vocabulary that evokes a feeling of impending movement, interaction and drama. At times, these imaginary scapesare vaguely reminiscent of the landscapes one might see on the Earth’s surface from the comfort of an airplane seat, suspended high above. Much of my work seems to inhabit a temporary state of transition, and suggests a spatial relationship with time that captures the play of light and pattern on a given surface.
I am interested in experimenting with a variety of materials, tools and processes, and actively avoid holding on to preconceived notions about what constitutes ‘art’ or anything else that might inhibit the possibilities that might arise through the process or the medium. I am as interested in ‘deconstructing’ the work as I am in its construction, and I am drawn to consider endless juxtapositions.
I view my original works on paper, monotypes, limited-edition digital prints and sculptural works as various aspects of a very personal journey of self-exploration and self-expression that finds its way into the life I happen to inhabit at that moment.

Duarte is a Venezuelan-American artist based in Houston. She has been exhibited around the world, including at the Holocaust Museum in Houston, the 2017 Texas Biennial in Austin and Museo de Arte Contemporáneo del Zulia, Maczul in Maracaibo, Venezuela. Duarte is known nationally for her distinctive monotypes and colorful paintings, characterized by sharp-edged geometric shapes that allude to her background in architecture. Her work focuses on themes of identity, fragility and the boundaries between personal and public. “I am working on a collage made of monotypes on paper,” Durate shares. “It is a collection of fragments, a fictional territory, where the hard stone texture seemed to be captured or trapped by the paper. It also has a structure made of monotypes as well, hovering over the surface, indicating a road to be traveled. “This work will be part of an ongoing series talking about territoriality, fragility and borders that I have been working on since 2018. For me, the concept of territoriality encompasses not only the physical aspect of the space, but the emotional part as well. These territories that I create are spaces that work as refuge and solace.
“They are a means to break away from chaos. They become repositories of longings, tributes and secrets.”

Luisa Duarte’s works has a strong connection with her Latin American roots, with special focus in the geometrical abstract movement, a movement adopted by Latin America during the late 50’s. It was very prominent in Venezuela. Probably the most prominent collection of geometric abstract art was given to MOMA by Patricia Phelps de Cisneros who now resides in the USA.
Her works are focused on explorations of shapes, lines , color and also on memories of her childhood in a promising country. Those memories are transformed into dynamic works invoking good energies to bring back what we have lost.
In these complex geometrical systems, objects intersect, merge and collide, producing negative spaces that call the viewer to attention. In some cases, the almost imperceptibly off-kilter placement of geometrical elements within a composition speaks to her emphasis on relationships - the objects always exist in relationship to each other.
There is a constant interest in constructing and deconstructing, and the consideration of endless juxtapositions.

Johnny Friedlaender was a leading 20th century artist, whose works have been exhibited in Germany, France, Netherlands, Italy, Japan and the United States. He has been influential upon other notable artists, who were students in his Paris gallery. His preferred medium of aquatint etching is a technically difficult artistic process, of which Friedlaender has been a pioneer.
Johnny Gotthard Friedlaender was born in Pless (Silesia) and his early studies were in Breslau under Otto Mueller. In 1936 Friedlaender journeyed to Czechoslovakia, Switzerland, Austria, France and Belgium. At the Hague he held a successful exhibition of etchings and watercolours. He fled to Paris in 1937 as a political refugee of the Nazi regime with his young wife, who was an actress. In that year he held an exhibition of his etchings which included the works: L 'Equipe and Matieres et Formes. From 1939 to 1943 he was interned in a series of concentration camps, but survived against poor odds.
After freedom in 1944 Friedlaender began a series of twelve etchings entitled Images du Malheur with Sagile as his publisher. In the same year he received a commission to illustrate four books by Freres Tharaud of the French Academy. In 1945 he performed work for several newspapers including Cavalcade and Carrefour. In the year 1947, he produced the work Reves Cosmiques, and in that same year he became a member of the Salon de Mai, which position he held until 1969. In the year 1948 he began a friendship with the painter Nicolas de Stael and held his first exhibition in Copenhagen at Galerie Birch. The following year he showed for the first time in Galerie La Hune in Paris. After living in Paris for 13 years, Friedlaender became a French citizen in 1950.
Friedlaender expanded his geographic scope in 1951, and exhibited in Tokyo in a modern art show. In the same year he was a participant in the XI Trienale in Milan, Italy. By 1953 he had produced works for a one-man show at the Museum of Neuchâtel and exhibited at the Galerie Moers in Amsterdam, the II Camino Gallery in Rome, in São Paulo, Brazil and in Paris. He was a participant of the French Italian Art Conference in Turin, Italy that same year.
Friedlaender accepted an international art award in 1957, becoming the recipient of the Biennial Kakamura Prize in Tokyo. In 1959 he received a teaching post awarded by UNESCO at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro. By 1968, Friedlaender was travelling to Puerto Rico, New York and Washington, D.C. to hold exhibitions. That year he also purchased a home in the Burgundy region of France. 1971 was another year of diverse international travel including shows in Bern, Milan, Paris, Krefeld and again New York. In the latter city he exhibited paintings at the Far Gallery, a venue becoming well known for its patronage of important twentieth century artists.
From his atelier in Paris Friedlaender instructed younger artists who themselves went on to become noteworthy, among them Arthur Luiz Piza, Brigitte Coudrain, Rene Carcan...
