MAVIS PUSEY (1928- ) Paris Mai-Juin 68, 1968 Color screen print on paper 33 x 24 ½ inches (image) Signed, titled, and numbered in pencil at lower margin: 3/40 / “Paris Mai-Juin 68” / MPusey From an edition of 40 African-American artist Mavis Pusey was born in 1928 in Jamaica, West Indies. Pusey began her studies in the Arts Students League in New York. Originally studying fashion she switched her interest to printmaking, studying with Will Barnet at the League. Further studies took her to London, where she worked at the Birgit Schold Workshop, then back to New York and finally to Virginia, where she received her B.A. at Mary Baldwin College. Between 1969 and 1972 she worked at the Robert Blackburn Workshop and later at the New School for Social Research in New York. She exhibited with Louis Soulanges in Paris, Curwen Gallery in London and AAA in New York. Her art has been exhibited internationally in galleries, collections, and in solo and group exhibitions. She has taught at various educational institutions, including the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts; Drew University, New Jersey, and the New School for Social Research, New York, among others. She was affiliated with the Federation of Modern Painters and Sculptors in New York; the National Museum of Women in the Arts; and the Visual Artists and Galleries Association to name a few. Pusey writes, "Tempo and movement hold onto a color and texture to convey the tension that is the heartbeat of the city. As an abstract-geometric artist, I have always been inspired by my environment. I see realistic shapes before I transform them into abstract forms." By Tetsuro Sawada ( Japanese, 1933-1998) This raven black geometric abstraction focuses on hard-edged horizontal lines, color, and light, giving the impression of dusk through the "bokashi," or shading, technique, which is most difficult in the silkscreen medium, a good example of Sawada's theme of the infinite beyond, the silent emptiness of the universe. It is in very good, never-framed condition with no flaws to note. Jean Marie Haessle was born in Buhl, Haut-Rhin, France. After living for a few years in Paris, he moved to New York City in 1967 where he still works and lives in his studio on Spring Street in Soho. Over the years, he had numerous shows in the US, New York, Miami, Texas and California, France and Italy (see the resume). In the mid-80’s he worked for a period in France (Paris, Lyon, and Cannes). In the late 90’s he worked in Mexico (San Miguel de Allende) where he had a one person show in 1997 in the Museo de Art in Queretaro. He had a survey exhibition of the last 30 years of his work at the Korean University Museum, Seoul, Korea in spring 2014 and a major one person show in the Namu Modern &Contemporary gallery in Seoul in September of the same year. In September 2016 he had a sold out show at the Wada Garou gallery in Tokyo, Japan. In recent years, he had numerous shows in Korea, Seoul and Busan as well as in Japan, Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka.
