About the Item

Silksreen, 1968 Handsigned by the artist in pencil and numbered 48/75 Publisher : Niki de Saint Phalle Printer : Albin Uldry (Bern) Catalog : [Chenivesse 22, p. 41] 59.00 cm. x 74.00 cm. 23.23 in. x 29.13 in. (paper) 59.00 cm. x 74.00 cm. 23.23 in. x 29.13 in. (image) Glossy paper In Sexy Sweet Clarice, the Nana is plural, protean, almost divine. She appears alternately in a bathing suit, a dress, a goddess, or transformed into a tree - like so many possible metamorphoses of the feminine. Around her, a dragon invades the composition, a figure of latent menace: “Don't let the dragon eatyou up”. The warning is clear: survive, resist, don't let yourself be devoured. This work pays homage to Clarice Price Rivers, a close friend of the artist and one of the first inspirers of the Nanas. The first figures in the series bore first names: Elisabeth, Bénédicte, Gwendoline... real, beloved, admired women. In her words: “As you were, Clarice, the original NANA, you can now consider yourself the model of the GREAT DEESS.” Autumn 1966 “Lettre À Clarice”. Certificate of authenticity LCD7220
