Otto Piene was born in Laasphe, Westphalia, in 1928 and grew up in Lübbecke. After military service and captivity, Piene began studying at the Blocherer School and the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich at the age of 20. Two years later, he transferred to the Düsseldorf Academy of Fine Arts, where he remained enrolled until 1953. This was followed by four years of philosophy studies at the University of Cologne. From the mid-1950s, Piene began to explore the element of light in his art. He presented his work in group exhibitions from 1955 onwards and in a solo exhibition in 1959, organized by the Schmela Gallery in Düsseldorf. In 1957, Piene and Heinz Mack founded the "ZERO" group, which Günther Uecker also joined. Together with the two other artists, Piene also published the magazine of the same name until 1961. Between 1961 and 1966, the group organized numerous ZERO exhibitions. In 1964, for example, it was represented at documenta 3 with a "ZERO light room" as a joint work by the three artists. That year, Piene took up a teaching position at the University of Pennsylvania, which he held for four years. He then moved to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) in Cambridge, USA, where he has held a professorship in environmental art since 1972 and was director of the Center for Advanced Visual Studies (CAVS) from 1974 to 1993. As early as 1967, the first retrospective of Piene's works took place at the Museum am Ostwall in Dortmund, and ten years later, documenta once again offered him a platform to present his objects. In 1990, the artist became a member of the advisory board of the Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe. Since 1994, he has been director emeritus at the CAVS. Otto Piene lives and works in Düsseldorf, Cambridge, and Groton, Massachusetts. Otto Piene is known for his light-kinetic works, in particular the Light Ballet, in which the artist seeks to establish a connection between nature and technology. His consistent exploration of the themes of light, movement, and space is also evident in his technically completely different grid and fire paintings, with which Piene has been experimenting since the 1960s, as well as in his air and light sculptures and in the Sky Events he has staged. Otto Piene died on July 17, 2014, in Berlin.

Fire, earth, and metal: these elementary forces played a very important role in the oeuvre of Otto Piene. After many years of artistic productions in 2006, he discovered a new material for his artworks: ceramic.
"With my artworks I want to transmit energy” — Otto Piene
He created wonderful mural reliefs in ceramic. He dropped viscous varnish through different raster-barriers on a prepared clay platter. Not only the setting of the platinum drops creates the individual and unique look of each work but also their convex and interleaving forms. The slight convexity of the platinum varnish drops reflects the light and gives the artwork a discreet white shine. With the mélange of archaic and modern elements, Piene achieves an impressing artwork with this powerful material.

Otto Piene is one of the most important German post-war artists. Born in 1929 Otto Piene was brought up in Lübeck (Germany) and, after his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and Düsseldorf, he completed his academic education with studies on philosophy at the University of Cologne. In 1957- Otto Piene and Heinz Mack founded the group ZERO; which Günther Uecker joined in 1961. Their aim was to create a recommencement of contemporary art, starting at the point ZERO with new artworks emphasizing predominantly on light. Piene primarily aimed in his artworks to visualize light, fire, and air; so he started to create Op-Art inspired raster paintings, followed by smoke and fire...
