About the Item

This exquisite lithograph by Paul Delvaux (1897–1994), titled Confidences, originates from the 1972 edition published by Editions A. C. Mazo et Cie., Paris, in collaboration with Leon Amiel, editeurs, New York, and printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris, April 5, 1972. This atmospheric and introspective composition exemplifies Delvaux’s poetic command of mood, form, and symbolism. Confidences captures a moment of quiet intimacy and reverie, where classical beauty meets surreal tension. Through his precise line, architectural structure, and luminous tonality, Delvaux transforms a scene of whispered conversation into a timeless meditation on silence, mystery, and human connection. Executed as a lithograph on velin d’Arches paper, this work measures 12.81 x 9.81 inches (32.54 x 24.92 cm). Unsigned and unnumbered as issued. The edition exemplifies the exceptional craftsmanship of the Mourlot Freres atelier, renowned for its collaboration with leading modern artists of the 20th century. Artwork Details: Artist: Paul Delvaux (1897–1994) Title: Confidences, 1972 Medium: Lithograph on velin d’Arches paper Dimensions: 12.81 x 9.81 inches (32.54 x 24.92 cm) Inscription: Unsigned and unnumbered as issued Date: 1972 Publisher: Editions A. C. Mazo et Cie., Paris, in collaboration with Leon Amiel, editeurs, New York Printer: Mourlot Freres, Paris Condition: Well preserved, consistent with age and medium Provenance: From the edition published by Editions A. C. Mazo et Cie., Paris, in collaboration with Leon Amiel, editeurs, New York, 1972 Notes: Excerpted from the album (translated from French), This album is the album of friendship, and I want to thank all the artists who wanted to participate. Some lithographs presented here, and whose authors have left us for too long, were made at my request for an album "Adieu a la rue de Chabrol" that I intended to publish ten years ago. So it was at this time that I was able to get the lithos of Braque, Cocteau, Derain, Giacometti and Villon. Mrs. Duthuit-Matisse and her brothers authorized me to print the composition of Henri Matisse, an unused original lithograph of the album by Teriade "La Religieuse portugaise". I am happy to have brought together so many works by contemporary artists, it is a great honor for me and I am infinitely grateful to them. Finished printing in Paris on April 5, 1972, this album was printed on velin d’Arches, in DCCC numbered examples. In addition, a number of copies were printed for artists, friends and collaborators of this album. The original lithographs were printed by Mourlot, and the typography is from Fequet and Baudier. Alain A.C. Mazo, Paris, and Leon Amiel, New York, publishers. About the Publication: Souvenirs et Portraits d'Artistes (Memories and Portraits of Artists), published in 1972 by Editions A. C. Mazo et Cie., Paris, and Leon Amiel, New York, stands as one of the most distinguished collaborative portfolios of the postwar era. Bringing together original lithographs by many of the 20th century’s foremost artists, the album celebrates creative friendship and the shared pursuit of artistic beauty. Confidences by Paul Delvaux exemplifies this spirit, embodying the lyrical mystery and meditative calm that define his vision. Printed at the renowned Atelier Mourlot, the album represents the pinnacle of modern French lithography and artistic collaboration. About the Artist: Paul Delvaux (1897–1994) was a Belgian painter whose ethereal fusion of surrealism, classicism, and psychological symbolism made him one of the most visionary and enduring artists of the 20th century. Born in Antheit, Belgium, Delvaux studied architecture at the Academie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, where he developed the structural discipline that would later define his meticulously composed dreamscapes. Initially influenced by Flemish realists, Delvaux found his true voice after encountering the revolutionary ideas of Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, whose avant-garde experimentation inspired him to explore the mysterious intersection of dream and reality. While aligned with the Surrealist movement, Delvaux’s art remained uniquely his own—serene rather than chaotic, poetic rather than provocative—melding the tranquility of classical architecture with the intimacy of human emotion. His paintings, populated by luminous female nudes, moonlit cityscapes, ancient ruins, skeletons, and railway stations, evoke a timeless world suspended between waking and dreaming. Influenced by Giorgio de Chirico’s metaphysical spaces and Dali’s dreamlike precision, Delvaux crafted a visual language of stillness and introspection, transforming silence into atmosphere and architecture into memory. His color palette—soft blues, pale greens, and muted greys—imbued his works with a spectral calm, while his classical precision and surreal vision created an emotional depth that resonated with postwar audiences seeking meaning amid modern uncertainty. Over his long career, Delvaux exhibited internationally at major venues including the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, the Musee d’Art Moderne de Paris, and the Tate in London, and his works entered the permanent collections of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, MoMA in New York, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. His influence extended far beyond painting, inspiring generations of artists, filmmakers, and designers—from Rene Magritte and Balthus to Federico Fellini, Andrei Tarkovsky, and David Lynch—who found in his serene dreamscapes a model for merging precision with mystery. Collectors prize his art for its meditative balance of sensuality and stillness, its quiet symbolism, and its meticulous craftsmanship. Standing alongside Picasso, Dali, Miro, Giacometti, Calder, Kandinsky, Duchamp, and Man Ray, Paul Delvaux remains a cornerstone of modern imagination, revered for transforming surrealism into a lyrical exploration of memory and timeless beauty. His highest auction record was achieved by Le Miroir (1936), which sold for $9.2 million at Sotheby’s, London, on June 21, 2016, reaffirming his legacy as one of the most poetic, visionary, and collectible surrealist painters of the modern era. Paul Delvaux, (born September 23, 1897, Antheit, Liège, Belgium—died July 20, 1994, Veurne), Belgian Surrealist painter and printmaker whose canvases typically portray transfixed nudes and skeletons in mysterious settings. From 1920 to 1924 Delvaux studied architecture and painting at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. His early work was influenced by Post-Impressionism and Expressionism, but after discovering the work of Salvador Dalí, Giorgio de Chirico, and his fellow Belgian René Magritte, Delvaux converted to a Surrealist style in the mid-1930s. He traveled through Italy before World War II, and the Classical architecture he encountered there developed into recurring motifs in his work. During that trip he was also greatly influenced by early 16th-century Italian Mannerist...
