Halley/Kozik, 1997
Offset Lithograph.
Hand signed by both Peter Halley and Frank Kozik on the lower front. Edition 75/100
22 1/2 × 35 inches
Unframed
This color lithograph was created on the occasion of the Peter Halley and Frank Kozik exhibition at Wooster Gardens from May 3 - June 14, 1997. Hand signed by both artists on the lower front and is annotated as a study proof: S/P 75/100.
Frank Kozik was born in Madrid, Spain in 1962 . At the age of 14 he moved to the United States and settled in Austin, Texas. Credited with single handedly reviving the “lost” art of the concert poster, his creative career rose largely out of his enthusiasm for Austin’s growing underground punk rock scene in the mid-eighties. Starting with black and white flyers for friends’ bands posted on telephone poles, his reputation grew as an artist whose work was graphically compelling as well as culturally gripping. This exhibition was an installation featuring an eight-year survey of punk rock posters by Frank Kozik (Wooster Gardens, 558 Broadway, along with the work of Peter Halley, through June 14).
A rare collaboration; uncommon to find this print hand signed by both artists!

Peter Halley
Peter Halley is an American artist known for his distinctive geometric paintings that explore the intersection of technology, society, and architecture. Born in 1953 in New York City, Halley developed an early interest in art and went on to study at Yale University, where he received his Master of Fine Arts degree in 1978.Halley's work is characterized by vibrant, flat colors and repetitive, abstract forms, often resembling circuit boards or prison cells. His paintings reflect his fascination with the effects of technology on human interaction and the isolation of modern society. Halley coined the term "prison cells" to describe the confined spaces and social structures that he believes have been created by technology and urban architecture. Throughout his career, Halley has exhibited his work internationally, gaining recognition for his unique style and thought-provoking concepts. He has also been involved in art criticism and writing, contributing to various publications and expanding the discourse on contemporary art. Today, Peter Halley's art continues to captivate audiences, provoking discussions about the impact of technology on our lives and the nature of human connections in an increasingly digital world. His contributions have made him an influential figure in the field of contemporary art.

This offset lithograph poster was published on the occasion of Anish Kapoor's exhibition "XLIV Esposizione Internazionale D'Arte" at the Biennale Di Venezia from May 27 to September 30, 1990. Hand signed posters by Kapoor are quite elusive.
The poster is two sided as it was published on the occasion of the artist's participation in the 1990 Venice Biennale (the verso has his lengthy biography), and it bears the original folds as issued.
British-Indian sculptor Anish Kapoor was chosen to represent Britain at the first Biennale of the 1990s. He had been exhibiting since 1980 but it was this show that brought him widespread recognition on the international stage. Sixteen huge sandstone blocks dominated the Pavilion’s main room; they were so heavy that the floor had to be reinforced with supports. Kapoor had started working in stone in the late 1980s and each block in Void Field (1989) has a hole filled with another motif in his work, the powdered blue pigment used in Indian religious ceremonies. The same vibrant tones, which was also inspired also by Yves Klein’s statement bold blue colour, were used in his low-lying slate sculpture, A Wing at the Heart of Things (1990), in the back gallery of the Pavilion; this work is now part of Tate’s collection.
“Venice is an interchange of East and West, reflecting the way Kapoor borrows from both cultures” said Henry Meyric Hughes, British Council.
Kapoor’s exhibition also wove together references to spiritualism and eroticism, with the red slit in the Pavilion's wall, entitled The Healing of St. Thomas (1989), alluding to the saint that doubted Jesus’ resurrection...

An original 1st printing in very good vintage condition.
Plate signed on the lower right from an edition of unknown.

Alexander Calder changed the course of modern art with his three-dimensional kinetic sculptures, which Marcel Duchamp named “mobiles.” Resonating with tenets of Futurism, Constructivism, and early non-objective painting, Calder’s mobiles consist of boldly colored abstract shapes, which are made from industrial materials and hang in lyrical balance. Calder was an international phenomenon during his lifetime. He won the grand prize for sculpture at the 1952 Venice Biennale, where he represented the United States. He earned the French Legion of Honor and the American Presidential Medal of Freedom, among other honors. Calder has been the subject of solo exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, the Rijksmuseum, the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, and the Museo Reina Sofía. His work regularly sells for eight figures on the secondary market. Though Calder is best known for his mobiles, his diverse practice also encompassed standing sculpture, painting, set and costume design, large-scale public installation, and jewelry-making.
