Calm as a Palm is a beautiful example of Pia Clodi's ability to inject beauty and sentiment into the everyday. This high contrast black and white photograph, which references early productions within photography, such as the Daguerrotype, invokes the viewer to consider form and shape over objectivity, and offers a moment of contemplative calm.
One might even like the photograph to that of the early botanist / photographer Anna Atkins, whose Cyanotype impressions illuminated the form and structure of an array of plant life in the late 18th century.
Pia Clodi’s works encompass moments and experiences from her travels, throughout her time as a commercial photographer. These chances, between or during jobs, to illuminate an object, a person or an instance, were quietly collected by Pia Clodi, on her Polaroid camera. An incredibly poetic practice, of passively capturing calmness and sensuality within otherwise lacklustre material and forms, enables Clodi to inject beauty in the everyday, and invoke nostalgia for quieter and slower experiences.
Inspired by the processes of creation, and early practices within photography, from the likes of Anna Atkins, Eugene Atget, William Fox Talbot and Louis Daguerre. Clodi’s work focuses on form and traces of life, over realism - whilst capturing stillness even through movement.

Pia Clodi
Pia Clodi’s works encompass moments and mementos from her countless walks through cities as well as naturescapes.
