Excerpted from the folio (translated from French), This special issue of Derriere le Miroir was designed and defined by Aime Maeght in the fall of 1980. He envisioned its publication as a celebration with which artists and writers published since 1946 were to be associated. He also chose Francois Chapon, president of the Reverdy Committee, to write the presentation. This Derriere le Miroir number 250 took the form, after its disappearance on September 5, 1981, of a tribute to Aime Maeght and his wife Marguerite Maeght who died four years earlier. 24 artists agreed to create an original graphic work for this issue which includes the general table of all issues as well as excerpts from texts by 32 writers. Finished printing on June 2, 1982 on the presses of the l'Imprimerie moderne du Lion in Paris. CL examples were printed on velin d'Arches, numbered from I to CL, and some non-commercial examples constituting the original edition.

Each issue functioned as both an exhibition catalogue and a work of art in itself—featuring original lithographs printed directly from the artists' stones or plates, alongside essays, poems, and critical commentary. Over the course of 36 years, Derriere le Miroir produced more than 250 issues and showcased an extraordinary roster of artists including Henri Matisse, Marc Chagall, Joan Miro, Georges Braque, Alexander Calder, Fernand Leger, Pierre Bonnard, Alberto Giacometti, Eduardo Chillida, Ellsworth Kelly, Francis Bacon, Paul Rebeyrolle, Claude Garache, Antoni Tapies, Bram van Velde, Pierre Alechinsky, Pol Bury, Shusaku Arakawa, and Gerard Titus-Carmel. Printed in the ateliers of Mourlot, Arte, and Imprimerie Moderne du Lion, the periodical set new standards for quality in color lithography, combining fine art printing with elegant typography and poetic text. Beyond its visual brilliance, Derriere le Miroir also became a cultural chronicle of postwar European modernism. Each issue coincided with exhibitions held at Galerie Maeght, providing a collectible and widely accessible record of groundbreaking shows. Its integration of image, text, and philosophy created a dialogue between art and literature that elevated the modern art book to new aesthetic heights. Raoul Ubac (1910–1985) was a Belgian-born French painter, sculptor, photographer, and engraver whose innovative experimentation with texture, surface, and form made him a key figure in postwar European modernism. Initially associated with the Surrealist movement in Paris during the 1930s, Ubac explored photography and engraving before developing a distinctive painterly style marked by tactile reliefs, dynamic abstraction, and a deep sensitivity to material. His compositions often evoke natural and mythological themes, blending spontaneity with rigorous structure. In both his technical innovation and poetic vision, Ubac’s work reflects the legacy of the great modern masters—Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Alexander Calder, Marc Chagall, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Georges Braque, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray—artists who, like him, sought to expand the expressive possibilities of form and matter. Over his long career, Ubac exhibited widely and collaborated with major galleries such as Galerie Maeght, earning a place in prestigious museum collections including the Centre Pompidou, the Musee d’Art Moderne de Paris, and the Tate. The highest price ever paid for a Raoul Ubac artwork at auction is approximately $190,000 USD, achieved in 2014 at Sotheby’s Paris for La Bête du Gévaudan (1959).

Raoul Ubac
Born in 1910, Raoul Ubac is an artist from the New Ecole in Paris. Raoul Ubac spent his early childhood in Germany (Prussia) between Cologne and Frankfurt.He returned to Paris in 1930 and enrolled in the Sorbonne.Then he met André Breton and frequented the surrealists and artists of Montparnasse.He undertook numerous trips across Europe and photographed the island of Hvar (now Croatia) of found stone assemblies. Then, on the advice of Otto Freundlich, German painter and sculptor, he enrolled in the School of Applied Arts where he worked in drawing and photography.First of all, he is most interested in photography and is experimenting with processes of burning, solarization and petrification. He participated in the activities of the surrealists and exhibited under the pseudonym of Raoul Michelet at the Exposition Internationale du Surreéalisme in 1935, the first surrealist exhibition taking place in Belgium. From 1936 he learned engraving in the studio of artist Stanley William Hayter and began to make photomontages.In 1970 he founded the magazine «L'invention collective» with René Magritte and then collaborated in the magazine «Messages» where he met Raymond Queneau and Paul Eluard. After the war, he gradually moved away from surrealism and abandoned photography. Raoul Ubac then embarks on drawing with a pen to create to launch himself in drawing with a feather and then engraving on slate to make gouaches, and ends up approaching the painting with an egg.He paints on panels covered with amalgamated resins which constitute a synthesis of his work and his research, dealing with the themes of bodies and furrows, subjects of predilection until his death. In 1968 a retrospective of his work was presented in Brussels and at the Musée d'art moderne in Paris. Raoul Ubac received the Grand Prix national des arts in 1973. He was responsible for several sets of stained glass windows as well as reliefs, high reliefs, wall decorations and models of tapestries for public and private buildings. He has also illustrated with his drawings, engravings and lithographs some thirty books and is the author of the cover of the journal «Argile» published by Maeght from 1973 to 1981. Ubac’s works are part of many collections of museums in France and Europe. In 1980, the French Post Office issued a stamp reproducing one of its creations. Raoul Ubac died on March 24, 1985.
