About the Item

This exquisite lithograph by Raoul Ubac (1910–1985), titled Sans titre (Untitled), from the album XXe Siecle, Nouvelle serie, XXe Annee, N°10 (double) Mars 1958, originates from the 1958 edition published by Societe Internationale dArt XXe Siecle, Paris, under the direction of Gualtieri di San Lazzaro, editeur, Paris, and printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris, 1958. A striking example of Ubacs postwar experimentation, the work reflects his mastery of abstraction, surface, and texture, capturing the poetic tension between spontaneity and structure that defines his mature style. Executed as a lithograph on velin paper, this work measures 12.5 x 9.75 inches. Unsigned and unnumbered as issued. Printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris, one of the most esteemed ateliers of the 20th century. San Lazzaro, a visionary editor, critic, and champion of modernism, believed that art and literature should exist in harmonious dialogue. Under his direction, the journal became an essential bridge between European modernism and international artistic movements, publishing special issues devoted to leading masters such as Picasso, Matisse, Chagall, Braque, Miro, Leger, Kandinsky, and Calder. Each issue included original lithographs, pochoirs, linocuts, or wood engravings produced by premier ateliers such as Mourlot, Lacouriere, and Atelier Jacomet, making XXe Siecle not only a scholarly record but also a collectible art object in its own right. The 1958 double issue, Nouvelle serie N°10, stands among the journals important mid century publications, reflecting the dynamic exchange between postwar abstraction and the broader heritage of modernism. Today, XXe Siecle remains a landmark in the history of art publishing, prized by museums, collectors, and scholars. About the Artist: Raoul Ubac (1910–1985) was a Belgian born French painter, sculptor, photographer, and engraver whose innovative experimentation with texture, surface, and form made him a key figure in postwar European modernism. Initially associated with the Surrealist movement in Paris during the 1930s, Ubac explored photography and engraving before developing a distinctive painterly style marked by tactile reliefs, dynamic abstraction, and a deep sensitivity to material. His compositions often evoke natural and mythological themes, blending spontaneity with rigorous structure. In both his technical innovation and poetic vision, Ubacs work reflects the legacy of the great modern masters Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Alexander Calder, Marc Chagall, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Georges Braque, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray artists who, like him, sought to expand the expressive possibilities of form and matter. Over his long career, Ubac exhibited widely and collaborated with major galleries such as Galerie Maeght, earning a place in prestigious museum collections including the Centre Pompidou, the Musee dArt Moderne de Paris, and the Tate. The highest price ever paid for a Raoul Ubac artwork at auction is approximately 190,000 USD, achieved in 2014 at Sothebys Paris for La Bete du Gevaudan (1959).
