Robert Morris
A Final Tomb for Frank "Jelly" Nash (Hand Signed)

1980

About the Item

Robert Morris A Final Tomb for Frank "Jelly" Nash, 1980 Silkscreen on wove paper Hand signed, dated and numbered 153/180 in graphite by the artist on the front 26 × 32 inches Unframed Frank "Jelly" Nash, was considered the most successful bank robber in US history; He was originally from Kansas City - like the artist Robert Morris. In this work, Morris uses the outlaw's story to explore the relationship between text and art, and it is an example of Morris' preoccupation with the concept of prisons and cells in art. 26 x 32 inches (sheet) Signed, numbered, and dated in pencil in lower margin front from the limited edition of only 180. Printer: Styria Studios, NYC Reference: Fig. 42 in "Robert Morris: Estampes et Multiples 1952-1998, Catalogue Raisonne" by Christophe Cherix, Geneve et Chatou 1999. Text: A 1933 Chevrolet and a 1932 Dodge sedan are found and fully restored. They are placed in the parking lot of the Kansas City, Missouri, Union Station in precisely the places they occupied the morning of June 17, 1933 (with the help of UPI photographs and old police records this can be determined). Frank "Jelly" Nash's body --wherever it now is-- is disinterred and buried beneath the 1933 Chevrolet. Mr. Nash, who had reputedly robbed with the Barkers, was being transferred from a train, the Missouri Pacific Flyer, to the Chevrolet, for transport to Leavenworth Penitentiary, when he was machine-gunned to death by unknown assailants. Also killed in or around the two cars in what was to become known as the "Kansas City Massacre" were FBI agent Raymond Caffrey, police chief Otto Reed, detectives W.J. "Red" Grooms and Frank Hermanson. Plaster casts of still existing groups of bullet holes in the station walls can be made and sold inside the station, together with a pamphlet describing the event.
