Rufino Tamayo was an influential mid-20th-century artist active in both Mexico and New York, known for his figurative abstraction with surrealist influences. As a painter and printmaker, he seamlessly blended modern European styles with Mexican folk themes, creating bold, symbolic works that merged elements of European modernism, indigenous motifs, and pre-Columbian ceramics. His compositions featured emotive color palettes and simplified, geometric forms, drawing inspiration from Cubist pioneers Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque.
Tamayo studied at the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas “San Carlos” in Mexico City before joining the ethnographic drawing department at the Museo Nacional de Arqueología, where he immersed himself in pre-Columbian art. Throughout his career, he exhibited widely in major cities such as Mexico City, New York, and Paris. Today, his works are highly valued on the secondary market, often selling for seven figures, and are housed in prestigious institutions including the Tate, the Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

Rufino Tamayo
Rufino Tamayo was born in Oaxaca, Mexico, in 1899 to parents Manuel Arellanes and Florentina Tamayo. Tamayo was active in the mid-20th century in Mexico and New York, painting figurative abstraction with surrealist influences. Although Tamayo studied drawing at the Academy of Art at San Carlos as a young adult, he became dissatisfied and eventually decided to study on his own.
