About the Item
BRHHP 33, Original Signed Contemporary Neutral Toned Monoprint

There is a quiet simplicity in this modern abstract monoprint by artist Sheila Crider. Though consisting of entirely neutral tones, the work has an energetic spirit that shines through. With pattern-like linear mark making whose verticality seems to lift the work up, and the presence of a sporadic and chaotic fine line squiggle, the print evokes a playfulness and levity, despite its lack of color.
The title of the series, BRHHP, stands for Between Rocks and a Hard Heart Place.
Artist Commentary:
Fin de series. This is one of the remaining prints from a series of 60 monotypes executed at Lily Press with masterprinter Susan Goldman in 2012. They are based on a visit to Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia and road markings on the island of Saba in the Caribbean. We made the principle cimtrex plate putting a piece of slate through the press to mimic the road and the crumbling wall of the prison.

Now I make objects based on materials and process then create installations around social and/or aesthetic ideas manifesting an integration of image, object and frame into pictures or settings that read as something familiar. Philosophically and socially, I work to strengthen the artist’ relationship with the public at large and to challenge how and where “art” is defined.
