About the Item
"Day For Night-Summer Night" captures a view from the east side of Shizico Yi's long garden, looking towards the west gate where the 130-year-old lime trees canopy frames her summer herbaceous border, filled with alliums, foxtail lilies, and wildflowers on both sides.
Lime trees were Queen Victoria’s favourite, were planted across the UK in late 19 century.
Shizico painted plein air from day until late at night often until 10 pm, given the late sunsets in northern Europe in summer, she named the painting "Day For Night" as a nod to the filmmaking technique of shooting night scenes during the day with a filter.
The title also pays homage to her love of French cinema and director François Truffaut. She masters the shades of blue to represent the night sky, even though most of the canvas was painted in the light of the long summer days.
This painting is a part of Summer Bloom Series, it is Shizico Yi's ongoing project in every summer at her garden. She began gardening in 2015 to create a large, healing space for her then ill, elderly dog. After her beloved Labrador passed away, this memorial garden became a source of inspiration for her art and a place of solace as she coped with grief.
Through paintings, time is frozen on her canvas as she treasures the memories of loved ones with the offering of nature.
