Sofie Swann
Born in Tehran, abstract painter Sofie Swann escaped the Iranian revolution at a young age and subsequently lived in the United States and France. Keeping her heritage close, Swann uses Persian tea in varying amounts as a subtle nod to her roots. The sepia tones are, at times, a faint addition, though this trademark signature creates a sense of place in every work she makes.
Swann spent time studying at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University in Boston where she explored landscapes and portraiture. Through experimentation, she developed a passion for abstract and minimalist art. While later living in Paris, she discovered key influential artists including Vincent van Gogh, Franz Kline, Mark Rothko, Cy Twombly, Louise Bourgeois and Yayoi Kusama.
As a process of self-discovery and self-expression, her paintings take the form of visual autobiographies, telling a narrative of memories, both real and imagined, and the emotion she draws from remembering them. Swann prefers not to sketch intentional designs before beginning a painting and rather lets the work evolve organically. “My thoughts and emotions. That’s where it all starts,” she said in an interview with Sorelle Gallery. “I don’t paint what I see. I paint what I feel.”
Since 2015, Swann has exhibited in solo and in groups around the United States, including at Chroma Fine Art Gallery in Katonah, New York; Silvermine Galleries and the Carriage Barn Arts Center, both in New Canaan, Connecticut; and Sorelle Gallery in Westport, Connecticut.

- Da CapoBy Larry Hill ArtLocated in Fresno, CA“I’ll find me a place by the river now and give up all my story lines.” – Van Morrison All of these paintings originated in the past year, but I suspect they truly began in 1955 after I returned from the army to complete my college education at Fresno State. Having discovered the heroic-scaled canvases of the abstract impressionists while away, I changed my major to art. Soon, after enrolling into a painting class taught by Darwin Musselman, I felt I’d be advancing from the old school to the new wave. Wrong. Musselman, an intense taskmaster, held me firm to the basics and taught me how to crawl first. The flying would come after I paid my dues. Musselman had studied at the Los Angeles Art Center and The School of Arts and Crafts in Oakland. Proficient in many styles of painting, he never shied away from demonstrating techniques he felt might spur a student’s progress. About the time I began to suspect he was controlling us all too tightly, he showed the class Hans Namath...Category

- Toys in the Attic-Limited Edition Giclée print on Archival Cotton Paper AbstractLocated in Bal Harbour, FLToys in the Attic, 2016 Giclée print on Archival Cotton Paper. Acid and Lignin-free. The painting is a limited edition Giclée print, meticulously crafted on archival cotton paper, ensuring its durability and preserving the intricate details of the artwork. The composition takes us into the realm of imagination, depicting toys stored in an attic. Instead of representing the toys in a literal manner, the artist employs a delightful mix of geometric shapes and colors to stimulate our imagination and conjure up images of these playful objects. As we explore the artwork, we can discern a plethora of shapes carefully arranged to evoke the presence of toys. Circles, triangles, squares, and rectangles dominate the composition, both in regular and irregular forms. These shapes interact harmoniously, creating an abstract and fanciful representation of the toys that once brought joy to children. The artist's skillful use of colors enhances the whimsical atmosphere of the painting. Shades of green, orange, soft purple, soft pink, soft yellow, violet, black, and white come together, creating a captivating palette that infuses the artwork with vibrancy and energy. The colors evoke a sense of nostalgia and playfulness, transporting viewers to the imaginative world of childhood. Through the artist's masterful execution, the painting invites us to engage our imagination, allowing us to perceive the hidden toys within the abstract forms.
