Sol LeWitt
Parallel Curves

2000

About the Item

Sol LeWitt (1928-2007) is an important contributor to the 20th century's most cerebral "isms" notably minimalism and conceptual art. Many of his works were created from elaborate and detailed instructions rather than his own hand or labor. His (in)famous large-scale "wall drawings" for example, destabilized and expanded the definition of authorship as they were executed by teams using instructions. Furthermore these classic "wall drawings" were often temporary - only lasting the duration of an exhibition. Influenced by his time as an architect, LeWitt's artistic practice was rooted in a deep appreciation of geometric forms. Utilizing ratios, patterns, and formulas, the artist would create geometric works across many mediums. "Parallel Curves" is a fine example from the last chapter of the artist's career. Set on a saturated tomato red backdrop, this work features a series of intricate curves that converge to form a web-like pattern. The curves, executed in a soft translucent grey/violet, transform into a cool mauve when intermixed with the red surroundings. This is a fine example of LeWitt's remarkable mastery of color and form. "Parallel Curves" was included in the "Landfall Press 30th Anniversary Portfolio" alongside works by Claes Oldenburg and Jim Dine, among others. Today, LeWitt's work is represented in numerous public institutions including the MoMA (New York), the Tate Modern (London), the National Gallery of Art (Washington, D.C.), and the Centre Pompidou (Paris), among others. Reflections III
By Louise Nevelson
Located in Toronto, Ontario
Caviar20 is excited to be offering this evocative print by the inimitable Louise Nevelson - one of the most revered and unique sculptors of the 20th century. Nevelson is renowned for her mysterious and complex artworks. She was an active printmaker, experimenting with different techniques and approaches while working with some of the best print-making studios in the United States. Nevelson, whether working in sculpture or in two dimensions typically had a strict palette; almost exclusively black. While there are iconic works in white, gold, or raw wood, Nevelson almost entirely avoids color. However, during the last decade of her life, her palette expanded notably with her printmaking. "Reflections III" is an example from her 1983 portfolio, "Reflections I-V" consisting of six large-scale prints. These prints contain signature elements found throughout Nevelson's prints; ripped or collage-like forms as well as the use of fabric, lace, and toile in the printing process. However one of the strongest characteristics of the "Reflections" series is her new uninhibited use of color. Here it is used to maximum effect. This work features unexpected elements of fuchsia, crimson, and Prussian blue that punctuate her signature layered collage-like composition. Nevelson's late prints are truly some of her best. Over the last few years, there has been tremendous momentum in both interest and appreciation of Nevelson's work. In May of 2021, a new auction record of $1.35 million was established for one of Nevelson's signature white construction sculptures...

The Pequod Meets the Jeroboam: Her Story from the Moby Dick Deckle Edges Series
By Frank Stella
Located in Long Island City, NY
Two whaling ships meet out at sea, one named after an Indigenous American tribe and the other after the first king of the northern Kingdom of Israel, the latter set upon by a malignant epidemic and a sailor gone mad with the belief that he is the Archangel Gabriel. Both ships are plagued, one by sickness and the other by obsession, and neither heeds the warnings of the mad prophet. Built out in layers of paper that have been printed using techniques like lithography and etching, this colossal print by Frank Stella employs careful color against warping black and white grids to give the impression of control slowly slipping and giving way to chaos. Photos don't give this piece proper justice; it is carefully collaged in purposeful layers that constantly pull the eye in every direction and the viewer closer and closer in.
