Flare is the culminating project of the 2007–2008 collaborative Artist and Poet in Residence Program sponsored by the Yale University Art Gallery & Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Yale University. The book includes new poems by Cole Swensen and new prints by Thomas Nozkowski. The poet and illustrator visited Yale together on several occasions to work on this project, influencing one another’s artistic process and completed work, and the book reflects the makers’ creative conversation and collaboration.
About Thomas Nozkowski:
Thomas Nozkowski is recognized for his richly colored and intimately scaled abstract paintings and drawings that push the limits of visual language.
An awareness of perception and the desire to explore the possibilities of seeing, is at once grounded in reality for the artist and released from specific legibility. His concurrent practices of painting and drawing reflect on specific places and experiences—from the deeply symbolic to the notational—translating sensations and memories into abstract compositions.
Nozkowski began exhibiting in group shows in 1973 and made his solo debut in 1979. By 1982, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, had acquired a painting from an early one-person exhibition for their permanent collection. To date, Nozkowski’s paintings have been featured in more than 300 museum and gallery exhibitions worldwide, including over 80 solo shows.

Thomas Nozkowski
Thomas Nozkowski (March 23, 1944 – May 9, 2019) was an American contemporary painter.[1] He achieved a place of prominence through his small scale paintings and drawings that push the limits of visual language. Nozkowski was born in Teaneck, New Jersey and raised in Dumont,[2] where he graduated from Dumont High School in 1961.[3] He spent his youth in the New Jersey suburbs, admiring New York culture from afar before moving there after graduating high school. When he was a senior in high school he won a scholarship to attend a painting class at New York University's School of Education, where he studied with Robert Kaupelis and Hale Woodruff.[2] While he earned his BFA at Cooper Union, Nozkowski was making sculptures. He graduated in 1967. He later transitioned to painting, and exhibited some of his earliest works in group shows at the storied Betty Parsons Gallery.[4]
