About the Item
The iconic 1930 poster, "Lys Chantilly - Chemin de fer du Nord," is a testament to the genius of its creator, Adolphe Mouron Cassandre, one of the most influential poster artists of the 20th century. This vintage gem not only promotes a railway but also serves as a canvas for Cassandre's exceptional talent.
Cassandre was born in Kharkiv, Ukraine, in 1901, and later adopted his pseudonym by blending his two first names, Adolphe and Mouron. He studied at the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and quickly made a name for himself as a graphic designer, typographer, and poster artist.
His composition for the Chemin de fer du Nord poster is a testament to his mastery. Against a backdrop of midnight blue, the elegant "Lys Chantilly" locomotive speeds forward, an emblem of modernity and luxury. Cassandre's bold and innovative typography, with the train's name curved gracefully above, adds a touch of artistic brilliance.
What sets this poster apart is not just its aesthetic appeal but also its historical significance. It captures the essence of the Art Deco movement of the 1930s, characterized by its streamlined forms and luxurious sensibilities. "Lys Chantilly" represents the epitome of elegance in rail travel during that era.
Cassandre's work reflects his ability to blend artistic vision with commercial appeal. He was a pioneer in the world of poster design, known for his innovative use of typography and geometric shapes. His influence extended beyond posters to include iconic logos for brands like Yves Saint Laurent and Dubonnet.
Today, Cassandre's 1930 poster remains a beloved piece of art and a historical artifact. It not only promotes the Chemin de fer du Nord but also stands as a testament to Cassandre's enduring impact on the world of graphic design and art.
In conclusion, Adolphe Mouron Cassandre's "Lys Chantilly - Chemin de fer du Nord" poster is a masterpiece that transcends its advertising purpose. It celebrates the height of luxury travel in the 1930s and showcases Cassandre's extraordinary talent. This vintage gem continues to inspire and captivate, reminding us of the artistic genius behind its creation

Adolphe Mouron Cassandre
Cassandre, pseudonym of Adolphe Jean-Marie Mouron (1901 – 1968) was a French painter, commercial poster artist, and typeface designer. Born in Ukraine to French parents, Cassandre moved to Paris as a young man where he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts and at the Académie Julian. The popularity of posters as advertising afforded him an opportunity to work for a Parisian printing house. Inspired by cubism as well as surrealism, Cassandre became successful enough that with the help of partners he was able to set up his own advertising agency called Alliance Graphique, serving a wide variety of clients during the 1930s. He is perhaps best known for his posters advertising travel. His creations for the Dubonnet wine company were among the first posters designed in a manner that allowed them to be seen by occupants in moving vehicles. His posters are memorable for their innovative graphic solutions and their frequent denotations to such painters as Max Ernst and Pablo Picasso. In 1936, his works were exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City which led to commissions from Harper's Bazaar to do cover designs.
