About the Item

"Contentment, " Grey Japanese Bantams, by the British painter and printmaker John Robert Granville Exley (usually JR Exley) is more than about poultry. This male/female pair sit in close, almost overlapping proximity to one another. In a species in which the male is known as particularly aggressive, here he his not only beautifully decked out but is the epitome of calm. They are an 'old married couple.' This print is signed in pencil but also, titled (in exceptional lettering) and signed, within the plate. Exley of course is an accomplished draftsman and he made a speciality of fowls. There are horizontal inked lines above and below the image. Probably these indicate that the artist took the sheet from an accounting journal -- it's lovely paper and every detail shows well. It was issued in a proposed edition of 75, although in my opinion it is unlikely that it was completed. Otherwise it would be much more available.
