About the Item
"The Bees are Dying" Original Bay Area Environmental Aquatint with Drypoint
Etching with environmentalist commentary by Maria Bennett (American, 20th century.) This piece features a large bee in its center, with its head and abdomen front facing. It is a detailed rendering, with aspects such as the hairs on the bees legs individually marked with drypoint. An organic round shape sits at the bottom of the bee, potentially a cluster of bee larva. The central bee is rendered in deep brown, the larva in a golden brown. There is abstract and organic detail work surrounding the bee which is a deep and bright red. These warm tones are then contrasted by the green background, which is filled with lattice shapes and smaller bees. The artist uses a combination of aquatint and dry point to obtain areas of smooth color, as well as intricate linework with prominent raised ridges.
