Marino Marini
Mid-Century Modern Lithograph in Colors by Marino Marini, Italy, circa 1970

Circa 1970

About the Item

This vibrant and iconic lithograph in colors was realized by the acclaimed Italian artist Marino Marini, circa 1970. A contemporary of Jean Arp, Alexander Calder and Henry Moore, Marini is best known for his figurative equestrian themed artworks. Born on February 27, 1901 in Pistoia, Italy, he studied painting at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence, before turning his attention to sculpture shortly after graduating. In 1936, Marini began to receive the recognition he deserved. He was honored with the Quadriennale Prize of Rome and also included in a group exhibition of Italian art at The Museum of Modern Art in New York. His work is now represented in institutions around the world, including the Tate Modern in London and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice. This piece helps to explain why he has remained one of Italy's most celebrated and enduring artists of the 20th century. Set against a background in variegated hues of turquoise, the composition depicts a jockey riding a horse. The artist has abstracted the sable hued equine form to the point of appearing nearly topographical, like an island on a map surrounded by tropical waters. More colorful forms- in sapphire, ruby, and china white- float above the black horse representing the jockey, who dons a red jersey and matching hat. Through a limited palate and austere forms, Marini succeeds in creating a composition that brims with dynamism and vitality. Depicting Marini's most iconic subject and printed in a small edition of 50, this is an excellent example of his oeuvre at an accessible price point. It is a great find for any collector of Post-War art, especially for those interested in the best of Mid-Century Italy, or for those who are simply looking for a stunning wall decoration. It is hand signed and numbered 14/50 by the artist in pencil. It is presented in a custom silver gilt-wood gallery frame. Excellent condition. Italy, circa 1970 Dimensions: 32.5" H X 25" W X 1.5"D 29.75"H X 21.5" W for the sheet
