About the Item

Brave New Worlds 6 is one of a series of 20 unique color variations of this title. The digital pigment print with diamond dust on canvas is signed and titled on the verso, and framed in a contemporary, black wood moulding. The image size is 43 x 43.25 inches and the framed dimensions are 46.5 x 46.5 inches. Brad Faine brings our beautiful solar system to life with imaginative pairings of great landscape paintings with our many planets and moons. The eight major planets circle around a glowing sun by Van Gogh. The Earth and our Moon are graced by images of Monet’s water lilies and the rest of the planets are (Mercury) Georgia O'Keeffe, (Venus) Vincent van Gogh, (Mars) Andre Derain, (Jupiter) Paul Cezanne, (Saturn) Edvard Munch, (Uranus) Jan Toorop and (Neptune) Casper David Friedrich. Additional landscape paintings represent some of the 286 moons and dwarf planets in our system, and A- Z text around the border lists many of their most famous names. The background image is taken from a NASA photograph of our galaxy. Each of these mono-prints are produced digitally using archival inks on a stretched canvas, finished with a gloss varnish, and there is diamond dust on the rings of Saturn. Each mono-print is a one-of-a-kind, completely unique! Reference and appropriation occupy hallowed ground in art history.Since the earliest days of artist’s workshops, copying the work of the masters was a technique used to hone one’s skills. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the practice of referencing and remaking great works became a means of placing oneself in dialogue with the masters and declaring one’s place within the canon. Carrying the tradition of referencing the canon into New Media art, Brad Faine (1945- ) is a renaissance man: a master printmaker, professor, artist, published author and inventor. It comes as no surprise then that when contemplating the way forward, Faine is also attracted to that which came before. His works reference literature and art; as well as veering into pure abstraction and employing letters to add a linguistic element. His images are smart and layered – by using the computer to create and manipulate images, Faine’s practice places him in dialogue with other artists who have embraced digital tools such as David Hockney and his iPad drawings. Simultaneously, with his appropriation of existing imagery to give form to message, his appreciation of literature, and his pointed tweaks at social issues, Faine is also in dialogue with Dada artists such as Hannah Höch or Kurt Schwitters.
