About the Item

After Jean-Michel Basquiat, Estate of JM Basquiat, 2010 Here we find two figures that are styled similar to traditional African art, reflecting the roots of Basquiat. Black forms are then touched with white lines to create detail . The left figure is standing tall, with a halo above their head, whilst the figure on the right is only included from the waist upwards, with arms open wide. The background is then filled with detail and expression, with swipes of wild colour and line. The artist would sometimes keep his backgrounds fairly simple. His work is categorised as Neo-Expressionism which was a part of the New York art scene of the 20th century, and he would become one of the characters best known within that group. He would also count some major celebrities within his friendship circle, such as Andy Warhol, with the two artists working collaboratively on a number of occasions. Basquiat loved colour, normally bright tones, and within Baptism we find tones of blue, yellow, orange and red. He may have kept a small palette in order to avoid mixing colours in the way that the old masters would have worked. This one is a lithograph signed on the plate and numbered of /300 Jean Michel Basquiat ( 1960 - 1988 ) was born to two Haitian immigrants in Brooklyn New York in 1960. His early creative career was as the Street graffiti artist nick named " Samo " in the late 1970's on New York City's Lower East Side. By the early 1980's with the help f his friend Andy Warhol, Basquiat began to make his emotionally charged aesthetically arresting Neo Expressionist paintings. In 1992 The Whitney Museum of Art did a retrospective exhibition of the life works of this great American Contemporary artists and master of social commentary. His work focused on suggestive dichotomies such as wealth vs poverty, integration vs segregation, and inner vs outer experience of the human condition. He appropriated poetry, drawing, painting, & married text and image with Abstraction and figuration. Basquiat's works had strong social commentary and deeper truths about the individual and the power structures of racism, and criticism of colonialism and support for class struggles. Excellent condition Size is framed, Limited edition numbered of /300 with "Estate of Jean Michel Basquiat" Embossed Stamp and "Jean Michel Basquiat" facsimile signature stamp. Black frame is coming with a plexiglass and a white mat.
