About the Item
This rare, original offset lithograph poster was produced for Robert Rauschenberg’s Gluts exhibition at Leo Castelli Gallery, New York, held from November 1–22, 1986. Printed on transparent paper, the poster reflects Rauschenberg’s experimental approach to materials and presentation. Hand-signed by the artist in green marker at the bottom, it is cataloged as number 34 in the Prestel publication Rauschenberg Posters.
The term “Gluts” refers to Rauschenberg’s series of sculptural assemblages created from scrap metal and industrial detritus. Inspired by a 1985 visit to Houston, Texas, during an economic downturn caused by an oil surplus, Rauschenberg collected discarded materials like gas station signs and automotive parts. He transformed these into artworks that commented on overconsumption and economic excess.
Rauschenberg described the series as “souvenirs without nostalgia,” aiming to present viewers with the remnants of excess and prompt reflection on the consequences of greed and material surplus. The Gluts series stands as a poignant commentary on the socio-economic issues of the time, showcasing Rauschenberg’s ability to infuse found objects with profound meaning.
