About the Item

Alex Katz (b. 1927) has been dedicated to art-making since the 1950's - however, it wasn't until the 60's when he established his signature 'flat' figurative style. Over the succeeding decades, Katz kept the tradition of figurative painting alive as it had long gone out of style. For Katz, printmaking has always been an essential part of his process, and an integral part of his oeuvre. He began experimenting with printmaking while attending Cooper Union, where he earned his BA in 1949. Though he initially focused on painting, he returned to printmaking in the mid-1960s with much enthusiasm. Since then he has created more than 400 editions including lithographs, etchings, silkscreens, woodcuts, and various prints on metal cutouts. Katz has typically been very involved in the printmaking process. Made with thirty-eight colors, this screenprint is technically impressive while remaining visually simplistic. Despite the many layers, Katz has conveyed the figure in his signature, flat style--with planes of colour distilling the scene to it's most important elements. Set against a dove-grey paper, the figure poses for the viewers. Every crease in his vibrant jacket, every contour and plane of his face is rendered with care. There is a softness to the image--with a relaxed expression, the portrait draws viewers in to an intimate encounter with the figure. A masterful example of Katz's distinctive style, "Green Jacket" conveys his unparalleled ability to capture fleeting moments with clarity. This print is part of the Ada and Alex, the 1960s to the 1980s portfolio, comprised of 8 screenprints. The painting that this print was based off (Green Jacket, 1989) of is in the collection of The Carnegie Museum. Impressions of "Green Jacket" are in the permanent collections of major institutions globally. Questions about this piece? Contact us.
