The British Evacuate Boston - 1932 Etching on Paper by Allen Lewis. From the portfolio "The Bicentennial Pageant of George Washington."
In this piece George Washington is front and center, standing on a rock next to the water and holding a spyglass pointed outwards towards the boats on the horizon, although his head is turned away from it. Below him and behind him are visible the tricorn-topped heads of a group of men. The piece features delicate linework and bold contrast between the shadows and highlights.
Signed and dated "Allen Lewis" bottom left corner.
"9" bottom right corner.
Presented in a new off-white mat.
Lewis, Allen (b. 1873 d. 1957)
Allen Lewis was born in Mobile, Alabama on April 7, 1873. His family moved to Buffalo, New York when he was 4 years old and he lived there and later studied at the Buffalo Art Students League until he was 21. He then worked in Paris where he first started exhibiting his etchings. Later, he returned to America and set up a studio in New York City with the help of his friend and fellow artist, Hamilton Easter Field. Lewis worked primarily on book plates during this period and in 1915 he was commissioned to create illustrations for Charles S. Brooks’ Journeys to Bagdad. Lewis taught printmaking and illustration at the Art Students League in New York from 1924 to 1932 and later taught at the New School for Social Research from 1932 to 1934.
