About the Item

Amy Wilson received her BFA from the School of Visual Arts, New York, in 1995 and her MFA from Yale University in 1997. Her drawings explore the tensions between her inner life and the exterior world, incorporating personal stories and observations along with commentary about current events both personal and newsworthy. Her small-scale watercolor drawings, etchings, and books feature tiny, hand-written texts and an ever-changing cast of talkative girls. Wilson has had solo shows at BravinLee Programs, Bellwether Gallery, MoMA-PS1, and The Drawing Center among others, and has participated in group exhibitions at PS1/MOMA, The Drawing Center, Josee Bienvenue Gallery, and the Grolier Club (all in New York) and the Pera Museum (Istanbul). She teaches drawing and art history at the School of Visual Arts, New York. The text in Reflection is as follows: I grew up in the city and that became my reference point for everything – I knew who I was in relation to buildings and sidewalks. I knew nature through trips to the museum and my experience of the nighttime sky was shaped by the Hayden Planetarium. I thought of nature as being this thing you watched – neatly controlled, it performed for you. But always, when experiencing it, only your eyes were engaged – the rest of you remained rooted in the familiar – the city – even if you forgot this for a moment. I thought I knew about nature, but I didn't – even today, after countless trips hiking and walking and being outside – I lack the intuitive understanding of the natural world that people who grew up near rocks and lakes and forests just had. I was fully unprepared for my first trips out of the city – the openness, the quiet, the smell of the outdoors, everything. I remember as a teenager I once wandered off-track and into the forest – nothing too far, but far enough for me – and how terrified I was to be so alone. It was still and silent until it wasn't – until my sense adjusted and I could hear the subtle sounds around me – wind in the trees, birds, that sort of thing. And in the same way, I went from being completely alone to completely not – I saw the world around me shift – I wasn't alone, I was surrounded by life, by living things, by a kind of unmanicured, uncontrolled aliveness I had never experienced before. In its own way, being out there in nature was like walking down Broadway with its own rush of life. You had to look a bit, but it was definitely there. A turn-of-the-century treatment for incurable illnesses was to move the patient into a natural setting and let him just sit. The idea was that the scenery would soothe him, but I think there's more – that being among trees and dirt and water and sky, we absorb some of that aliveness. The city devoured me – not that I ever discouraged this, but it did – while nature fed me. I came to realize I needed it so much to survive.
