About the Item

"Les Matelassiers (The Mattress Makers)" is an original etching by Auguste Brouet. It depicts people creating a mattress outside. The artist signed the piece lower right and wrote the edition number (30/50) lower left. 4 7/8" x 8 3/8" art 13" x 16 5/8" frame Born in Montmartre, the son of poor parents, Brouet, worked his way through night drawing classes and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He lived in poverty as an art student but became well known to collectors because of his sincerity in portraying the street-peddlers, gypsies, street-musicians, beggars, and rag pickers in the passages and places where they congregated. He portrayed the dark side of Montmartre in a romantic rendition, closely resembling the etched work of Rembrandt. In later life he became enthralled with the singers, dancers, and circus life of Paris. Brouet's sensitivity and sympathy for his subjects, shows an artist, who has lived the life of the poor portraying his subjects from an intimate point of view. Not only is he acclaimed as one of the important etchers of Paris but he has also etched approximately 20 plates of World War I, recognized not only as reliable documents, but of intense artistic quality. - from Born in Montmartre, the son of poor parents, Brouet, worked his way through night drawing classes and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. "Mes Petites Amies, Les Deux Sœurs" signed by Jacques Villon
By Jacques Villon
Located in Milwaukee, WI
This is a drypoint and aquatint artwork by Jacques Villon. The artist signed in pencil on the lower right. As well as signed in plate at the top right of the image. This is a wonderful artwork of different intaglio processes being brought together in a beautiful almost seamless harmony. The thin pencil like markings and hair detailing are made using the Drypoint printmaking method. Whilst the color details around the girls are made using the Aquatint etching method. Jacques Villon shows his skills as a printmaker with the way these pieces line up perfectly and with how clean the rest of the plate is around the girls. An unnumbered impression, apart from the numbered edition of 50. Catalogue Raisonne E101, pg. 66-67 (Ginestet & Pouillon. It depicts two young girls. 15" x 11 1/2" art 25 1/8" x 20" frame French painter, printmaker and illustrator. The oldest of three brothers who became major 20th-century artists, including Raymond Duchamp-Villon and Marcel Duchamp, he learnt engraving at the age of 16 from his maternal grandfather, Emile-Frédéric Nicolle (1830-94), a ship-broker who was also a much appreciated amateur artist. In January 1894, having completed his studies at the Lycée Corneille in Rouen, he was sent to study at the Faculty of Law of the University of Paris, but within a year he was devoting most of his time to art, already contributing lithographs to Parisian illustrated newspapers such as Assiette au beurre. At this time he chose his pseudonym: Jack (subsequently Jacques) in homage to Alphonse Daudet’s novel Jack (1876) and Villon in appreciation of the 15th-century French poet François Villon...

Interiors I: Family Reunion — A penetrating scene with a hidden homage to Eadwea
By Peter Milton
Located in Middletown, NY
Interiors I: Family Reunion 1984 Resist ground etching and engraving on BFK Rives wove paper, 20 x 36 inches (501 x 913 mm), full margins. Signed, titled, dated and numbered 49/175 in pencil, lower margin. In excellent condition with minor mat tone. A luminous, rich, and well-inked impression of this haunting image, with astonishing detail and depth. Framed handsomely under museum grade glass with archival materials in a solid wood frame with silver finish. [Milton 107] Intended to be a stand alone image in its inception, Family Reunion ended up spawning seven additional images, and became a sort of Primo Pensiero in the sprawling, masterpiece suite now known as Interiors. The suite took eight years to complete, and consists of works of varying format, psychological intensity, and subject matter. The thematic darkness in the eight images waxes and wanes, and Milton intentionally included several interlude works to lighten the tension he felt while composing several of the darker images. The first two in the series, Family Reunion, and Hotel Paradise Café, were meant to be companion pieces. The equilibrium of each composition is anchored on a central brooding figure; a man (perhaps based on a Thomas Eakins portrait of the American anthropologist Frank Hamilton...
