About the Item

Born in Paris in 1849, French painter, printmaker, etcher and illustrator Auguste Lepère apprenticed under British wood engraver Joseph Burn Smeeton in Paris at the age of thirteen. Lepère worked for thirty years as an illustrator, producing wood engraving illustrations for L’Art, Monde Illustre, La Revue Illustree and L’Illustration magazines and became known as one of the masters of French book illustration. Besides wood, Lepère also worked with metal for his etchings and limestone for his lithographs. He was a prolific artist, producing nearly one thousand wood engravings and more than one hundred etchings. Lepère's works are held in collections worldwide including at the Art Institute of Chicago, Dallas Museum of Art, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Musee d’Orsay, National Gallery of Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Carnegie Museum of Art, Cleveland Museum of Art, Harvard University Art Museums, Indianapolis Museum of Art and Minneapolis Institute of Arts, among others.
