About the Item

Lithograph, c. 1840s. Signed in the plate. Image dimension: 17x27.5 cm. A finely detailed lithograph by Auguste Raffet, representing a bustling encampment in Wallachia. In the center, a tent with seated figures anchors the composition, while to the left a peasant cart drawn by oxen approaches, and to the right groups of villagers gather in animated discussion. The lively presence of a dog in the foreground adds a touch of immediacy to the scene. Raffet captures with precision both the ethnographic details of regional costume and the broader atmosphere of daily life in Eastern Europe. Executed during Raffet’s travels through the Danubian Principalities in the 1840s, this work belongs to the artist’s celebrated series of lithographs that document his observations of Balkan society and culture. It demonstrates his rare ability to combine military reportage, popular life, and Romantic sensibility. Condition: Light foxing scattered in margins; central image strong and clear with fine contrasts.
