A superb, finely-nuanced impression, on cream wove paper; the full sheet with margins (1 3/4 to 3 1/2 inches), in excellent condition. Printed by master lithographer George C. Miller. Image size 9 7/16 x 8 1/4 inches (240 x 210 mm); sheet size 16 x 11 7/8 inches (406 x 302 mm). Archivally matted to museum standards, unframed. Collections: Library of Congress (Pennell Fund), Philadelphia Museum of Art. ABOUT THE ARTIST Bernard Steffen graduated from Neodesha High School circa 1925; he then attended the Kansas City Art Institute on a scholarship. In 1928 Steffen received a scholarship to the Colorado Springs Art Institute, where he and Thomas Hart Benton roomed together. Benton, who was at the forefront of the regionalist art movement became a lifelong friend and mentor to Steffen. Another scholarship took him to New York to study at the Art Students League with Ernest Lawson and Boardman Robinson. He also studied with the American modernist painter Stanton Macdonald-Wright Steffen from whom he absorbed the principles of compositional structure and color harmony. Steffen was a founding member of the American Artists Congress (AAC), an organization founded in February 1936 as part of the popular front of the Communist Party USA, a vehicle for uniting graphic artists in projects helping to combat the spread of fascism. During World War II, the organization was merged into the Artists' Council for Victory. A skilled painter who worked comfortably in watercolor, tempera, oils, and fresco, Steffen was awarded the silver medal at the Midwestern Exhibition at the Kansas City Institute in 1929. His prints took second prize at the Philadelphia Art Alliance and first prize in the Printmaking Competition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, 1940. His first one-person exhibition of paintings in New York was presented at the Contemporary Arts Gallery in October 1937. In 1936 and 1937, Steffen served as instructor and staff artist in painting and graphic arts with the Federal Resettlement Administration, traveling throughout the US. Between 1935 and 1941, he worked with the Federal Arts Project as a muralist. One of those works, a fresco in the post office of Neodesha where his father was then postmaster, depicted the Native Americans and early European settlers of southwestern Kansas. In 1945, while living in New York, Steffen exhibited his serigraphs and watercolors with those of his longtime friend Guy McCoy at the renowned Weyhe Gallery. During this period Steffen was an active member of the Color Print Society, for which he served as treasurer and trustee. In the early 1950s, he relocated to the famous artist’s colony in Woodstock, New York, continuing to exhibit his Regionalist screen prints widely. In 1963 he published his technical manual ‘Silk Screen’ supporting the technique as a fine art medium. A devastating fire in 1977 destroyed Steffen’s home and studio, with all of his art—what survives today are the works that were previously sold or in galleries and museums at that time. The artist continued to work steadily until his death on July 10, 1980, just two days before his last exhibition in New York. He was buried in the Artists Cemetery in Woodstock. Steffen’s graphic works are included in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, Block Museum (Northwestern University), Dallas Museum of Art, Detroit Institute of Arts Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, National Gallery of Art, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Smithsonian American Art Museum, The Spencer Museum of Art (University of Kansas), University of Michigan Art Museum, University of Richmond Museums, U.S. Library of Congress, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
