Portrait of Madame M.L. is a beautiful lithograph on brown paper realized by Charles Joshua Chaplin in 1884 as cover of the Catalogue off the "Salon" in Paris in 1884.
A woman, sitting on clouds and reading a book with angels in celebration, is the personification of the poetry.
This modern artwork, signed and titled on plate on lower corner "Portrait de M.L., d'apres Ch.Chaplin" , is realized with a very fresh impression and a rapid linein good conditions, except for a diffused foxing.
Inscription in the top of the plate, 15 Cent. le Numero - Administration_ 15, rue Daunou, Paris - Le Matin - Supplement Illustre Tableaux du Salon de 1884.
Charles Joshua Chaplin ( Les Andelys, 1825 –Paris 1891)
Charles Joshua Chaplin was a French painter and printmaker who painted both landscapes and portraits. He was an accomplished artist mastering different techniques and was best known for his elegant portraits of young women.
He studied at the Academy of Fine Art in Paris from 1840, he was a private pupil of Michel Martin Drolling whose apprentices included Paul Baudry, Jean-jacques Henner and Jules Breton.
In 1845 he was invited to the Salons. Chaplin conducted art classes specifically for women at his studio. The American artist Mary Cassatt, the French artist Louise Abbéma and the English painter Louise Jopling were among Chaplin's students.

Charles Joshua Chaplin
Charles Joshua Chaplin’s celebrated portraits of young women are reminiscent of the 18th-century romanticism of Thomas Gainsborough (1727–88) and François Boucher (1703–70) but his subjects are nevertheless recognizable as more modern Belle Epoque women. The critical and commercial success of Chaplin’s beautifully lit portraits of sensual young women captured en déshabillé established him as one of the foremost French academic painters of the period. By the late 50s, Chaplin was being inundated with commissions from the French aristocracy requesting portraits of their wives and daughters. Empress Eugénie, the wife of Napoleon III, was also a big fan and appointed him an artist of the court. The Empress and her husband’s enthusiastic support came in handy when, in 1859, his portrait Aurora was banned by the judges of the Salon in Paris for being "too erotically suggestive". The disqualification order was subsequently overturned when Napoleon III himself sprung to Chaplin’s defense. During his lifetime, Chaplin was awarded numerous medals at the Salon in Paris and, in 1865, he was declared a Chevalier and later Officer of la Légion d’Honneur (1881). Today his works are held in the collections of the Louvre in Paris, Hermitage in St Petersburg, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

"An extra-terrestrial spotlight falls on this battered subhuman figure; he does not look directly into the light but away from it, raising his hand to it like a beggar. The worn pads on his hands and knees shows that he has walked on them, like an animal, for a long time. There is nothing to suggest that he can stand. The beam of light looks cold, machine like, impersonal. Scornful satire marks the limit of comedy for '. . . there is nothing funny about scorn which comes round again almost to the attitude of divine comedy.'

Caroline Durieux created the technique (electron print) used in the depiction of "Morning".e. This is only one of 5 impressions. Some have theorized that the image is close to that of the artist's brother, Professor Charles Durieux.
In the electron print technique, radioactive isotopes are mixed with printing ink. A drawing is made and exposed face-to-face to paper coated with a radio-sensitized substance. The paper is then developed and produces an exact image of the original drawing.
“The image is transferred from the radioactive drawing to the sensitized paper by invisible beta rays,” says Dr. Wheeler. “Since beta rays are electrons, we named the process Electron Printing.”
