About the Item

"Machu Pichu" - Black and Grey Lithograph #10/200 Bold black and grey lithograph by David Alfaro Sequeiros (Mexican, 1896-1974). This piece is a high contrast, abstracted landscape. It appears to be black and white, but the artist has used a dark grey to create a subtle yet powerful variation in contrast. Signed lower right. Numbered along the bottom edge "10/200" Presented in a navy blue mat and giltwood frame. Frame size: 28"H x 45.25"W Paper size: 23.5"H x 40.5"W David Alfaro Siqueiros represents a key link in the history of universal art, although his fundamental role as one of the three greats of Mexican muralism is known at the hands of Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orozco, his political and artistic rebellion led him to innovate in global production. At the same time as being a critical figure of society, an issue that led him to prison on several occasions and even exile, he was part of the technical innovations of modern art. He had the opportunity to absorb first-hand the influences of the European avant-garde of the early 20th century and incorporate them into his work full of dynamism. Without a doubt, One of his greatest contributions, in addition to ensuring an art for everyone, was the influence exerted on Jackson Pollock with the introduction of technical experiments such as what David Alfaro Siqueiros called controlled accident, a concept shown by the Mexican master in the experimental workshop he taught in Manhattan in the mid-1930s, and is currently known as action painting and dripping. “The social necessity of Siqueiros' style and his aesthetics will therefore be fully understood only if his purpose in life is understood: to be an artist, and even more, the exemplary artist and savior of art and the revolution. David Alfaro Siqueiros was a leading figure in the Mexican school of great mural painters, alongside José Clemente Orozco and Diego Rivera. Siqueiros was wildly prolific in his career; his work often featured social and political subjects, and demonstrated his influences, including Francisco Goya, religious art, and Italian Futurism. Siqueiros’ works are distinguished for their use of dynamic perspective, monumental forms, dramatic use of shadow, and a limited color palette. In addition to painting, Siqueiros was an avid political activist with a tumultuous personal history; he once led a student strike against San Carlos Academy, and his more violent activities landed him in jail and, eventually, exile.
