Lithograph with hand coloring and engraving on white wove paper, 9 1/8 x 12 3/8 inches (230 x 313 mm), the full sheet. With moderate mat tone which is well outside of the image area, and two tabs of archival tape at the right and left sheet edges, also well outside of the image area. Framer's notations in pencil in the upper right margin. Colors remain fresh.
David Roberts was born in 1798 to an impoverished shoemaker in Stockbridge, Scotland. Roberts, who had no formal artistic training and was completely self taught, experienced success as a theatrical backdrop painter. Through his work he identified a public interest in scenes of exotic places. In 1838, at the age of 42, he traveled to Marseilles and then to Alexandria through Malta and Greece. The British counsul facilitated his visit in Alexandria, and Roberts had access to a boat, a crew of eight men and a servant. He went to Cairo, saw the pyramids and the sphinx and then traveled the Nile River, doing much drawing and journal writing and also experiencing many adventures including raging illness, bandits, and much vermin (his daughter, Christine, finding remnants of his travel journals, transcribed and published them many years later). Returning to England, Roberts worked with lithographer Louis Haghe, and the result was a six-volume set with 248 hand colored lithographs. The publication was described as "the most ambitious work ever published in England with lithographed plates." (Petra) Egypt and Nubia were the subjects of the first three volumes, and the last three volumes were devoted to the Holy Land. Sold by subscription in monthly installments, the volumes brought him great professional distinction and were groundbreaking in that they showed living people in contemporary circumstances on ancient soil.

David Roberts
David Roberts was born outside of Edinburgh, Scotland. At age 10 he became a house painter’s apprentice. He continued painting houses and, eventually, theater scenes in Edinburgh and then in London. Roberts’ friend, J.M.W. Turner, recognized his artistic talent and encouraged him to become a full-time artist.
In 1839 Roberts traveled to Egypt and then in 1840, through the Holy Land, concluding in Jerusalem. Upon his return to England, F.G. Moon agreed to publish lithographs created by Louis Haghe from Roberts’ sketches and watercolors. This publication was highly acclaimed and very popular for its esthetic quality, its historical and topographical accuracy, and Roberts’ dramatic depiction of his scenes. Queen Victoria and Charles Dickens were among the subscribers who collected his works. Roberts’ and Haghe’s duotone lithographs, often colored, remain extremely sought after today and have been rising steadily in value.

We have both Subscription and First Edition lithographs in stock. The subscription edition was printed on a fine paper, hand coloured and then stuck on card. The first edition was printed on a more coarse paper and not coloured by hand. These ones we colour to match the subscription colouring. Each lithograph is sold in mint condition and in an acid free mount.
