Dorothea Tanning
Dorothea Tanning (1910–2012) was an American surrealist painter, sculptor, writer, and poet. Born in Galesburg, Illinois, she moved to New York in the 1930s, where she was introduced to surrealism. Her early works, such as Birthday (1942), depict dreamlike, mysterious interiors with unsettling imagery. She later married fellow surrealist Max Ernst, and they lived in France for several decades. Over time, her art evolved into more abstract and expressive forms. In addition to her visual art, Tanning wrote novels and poetry, remaining active in creative fields until her death at 101.
