About the Item

Self-Portrait is an etching realized by Edouard Dufeu (1840-1900). Proof artist. Signed and dated on the upper left corner. Edouard Jacques Dufeu , born in Marseilles on March 27 , 1836, and died in Grasse on December 1 , 1900, is a French painter and engraver. Coming from a family originally from Egypt , Dufeu moved to Paris in 1860 and frequented the studio of Charles Gleyre . Between 1861 and 1865, he attended the Société des aquafortistes and bonded with its members. He engraved his first etching in 1862, Rue du Caire , published by Alfred Cadart and Luquet, also publishers of his series of engravings, Views of Egypt (1865) .A pupil of Antoine Vollon , he exhibited at the Salon des artistes français from 1865 to 1890. He taught drawing in various municipal schools in Paris and then provided drawings for various newspapers. His production alternates between landscapes and still lifes. he ended his life in Grasse, sometimes faced with the most cruel necessities, leaving a large number of paintings, watercolors and drawings in his studio.

Extase Poétique is an original artwork realized by the french artist Alphonse Legros (1837-1911). Etching print, 1876. Hand-signed on plate, on the lower left , titled on plate. Passepartout cm 50x32. The artwork was edited by A. Cadart Paris. Good conditions except some light foxings. Alphonse Legros was born on May 8, 1837 in Dijon, France. While young, Legros visited the farms of his relatives, and the peasants and landscapes of that part of France are the subjects of many of his works. He was sent to the art school at Dijon with a view to qualifying for a trade, and was apprenticed to an interior decorator. In 1851, Legros left for Paris, but passing through Lyon he worked for six months as journeyman muralist for painter/art restorer Jean-Baptiste Beuchot, who was painting the chapel of Cardinal Bonald in the cathedral.In Paris, Legros studied with theater scene painter Charles-Antoine. He attended also the drawing-school of Lecoq de Boisbaudran (the "Petite école") where he found made friends with Jules Dalou and Auguste Rodin. In 1855, he attended the evening classes of the École des Beaux Arts.Legros sent two portraits to the Paris Salon of 1857: one was rejected, and formed part of the exhibition of protest organized by Francois Bonvin...
