About the Item

Etching on laid paper Sheet size: approx. 65 × 50 cm Signed in plate lower left: F. Bracquemond Published by Cadart & Luquet, Éditeurs, 79 Rue Richelieu, Paris With the blindstamp of the Société des Aquafortistes, lower margin In Hiver (“Winter”), Félix Bracquemond captures a haunting stillness within a snow-laden landscape. Bare trees, rendered in delicate, nervous linework, rise starkly against a dense, crosshatched sky. A solitary wolf or dog crosses the field, its faint trail of paw prints leading the viewer’s gaze through the silent expanse. A leading figure in the 19th-century French etching revival, Bracquemond’s technical mastery is evident here in his control of line and tone — the forest’s texture emerges from subtle variations of pressure, creating an atmosphere at once naturalistic and psychological. The sparse composition reflects his sensitivity to Japanese aesthetics and his admiration for Rembrandt’s expressive chiaroscuro, merging Western realism with contemplative restraint. Excellent, richly inked impression with deep blacks and luminous highlights; very light marginal foxing and toning, otherwise fine. Private collection, Italy. A founding member of the Société des Aquafortistes and one of its most innovative printmakers, Bracquemond transformed etching into a medium of artistic expression equal to painting. Hiver exemplifies his synthesis of natural observation and poetic mood, foreshadowing the tonal explorations of later Symbolist and Impressionist printmakers.
