The present work is the third and final etching on which Francis Bacon worked personally. He later worked with a master printer who would print the works overseen by the artist's careful supervision. Here a man is seen grasping the tap of a washbasin with both hands as if seeking solace there. The force between the figure and the foot of the washbasin creates tension. It is as if both exert force and thus keep each other in balance. The arena or ring, which Bacon used in many works as the architecture of the picture, reinforces the feeling that this is a trial of strength.
The image is derived from a traumatic scene Bacon witnessed on the eve of the opening of his retrospective at the Grand Palais in Paris, in 1971. His paramour of the time, George Dyer, was found dead having taken his own life in the bathroom of his hotel in Saint-Germain-des-Prés. Bacon had frequently painted Dyer, who was a great muse and inspiration to the artist. They met in 1963 under extraordinary circumstances, when Dyer attempted to break into his studio.

Francis Bacon
Born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1909, prominent British painter and printmaker Francis Bacon created controversial art until his death in 1992.
Despite the fact that he did not receive formal training, Bacon gained instantaneous recognition in 1945 after an exhibition at Lefevre Gallery in London that included his 1944 triptych Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion. Bacon's figures can be described as distorted, fleshy masses in anguish; these shocking and unsettling images are his representation of the evils and the devastation of the human condition. Bacon's oil paintings simultaneously repel and intrigue the viewer with their bold, grotesque figures. This paradox remains consistent with his prints, which he based on a selection of 35 of his own paintings dating from 1965 to 1991. Bacon worked with skilled printers to create his relatively small body of etchings and lithographs that total only about 40 editions.
In 2008 and 2009, a major retrospective of Bacon's paintings traveled to the Tate Britain, London, England (September 11, 2008–January 4, 2009), to the Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid, Spain (February 3–April 19, 2009) and to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (May 20–August 16, 2009). Bacon's works are permanently part of public collections around the world, including the Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art, Oslo, Norway; Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, Birmingham, England; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C.; Museum of Modern Art, New York; and elsewhere.

Susan Hall lives and works in Point Reyes Station, California, a town in the heart of the Point Reyes National Seashore. This pristine wilderness area is dominated by a mosaic of bays and ocean, rolling grass lands and forests. It is inhabited by a diversity of wildlife, including over 450 species of birds, mountains lions, deer, bobcats, foxes, and elk. Ms. Hall who is a native of this area returned after spending twenty years in New York City.
In her book, “Painting Point Reyes”, Hall says, “Point Reyes is the center of my painting life. Point Reyes has been my life and when I haven’t lived here, it has been an underground stream that spoke to me in dreams and visions.”
While living and painting in New York City, Ms. Hall exhibited her work widely in museums and galleries. Among them are the Whitney Museum of Art; San Francisco Museum of Art; Nancy Hoffman Gallery, Trabia MacAfee Gallery, Phyllis Kind Gallery, Chicago; Ovsey Gallery, Los Angeles.
In addition, her work has been featured in group exhibitions throughout the United States and abroad, including in 2020 Bud Shark's Ink: The California Crew at BMoCA, Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art Colorado USA representing the panoply of aesthetics, cultural backgrounds, viewpoints, and talent held within the bounty of art “made in California.” This remarkable grouping of artists, Brad Brown, Enrique Chagoya, Roy De Forest, Amy Ellingson, Susan Hall, Don Ed Hardy, Mildred Howard, Robert Hudson, Hung Liu, Kara Maria, Rex Ray, Alison Saar, Italo Scanga, and William T.
