A donkey carries an urn in which lies the incorrupt body of a venerable character; around, the devotees who attend the procession kneel and pray in front of the relic. The donkey is a symbol of ignorance and stupidity; following certain apologists of the time, the press could be interpreted as a moral satire against vanity, meaning that the donkey (literary paradigm of foolishness) believes that it is the object of the veneration of the crowd. Goya, however, has also vehemently criticized the submission of the people to the uses and customs of the Ancien Régime - especially those of the Church (the revered corpse indeed) -, the result of ignorance (the donkey), a theme that also occurs in Desastres. This emphatic whim is to be related to the following, the plate N.67.

Francisco Goya
Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes (1746-1828) was a Spanish romantic painter and printmaker. He is considered the most important Spanish artist of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. His works often contained a social message, like in his "Disasters of War" series. Immensely successful in his lifetime, Goya is often referred to as both the last of the Old Masters and the first of the moderns. He was also one of the great portraitists of his time.
