About the Item

A beautiful image of fellowship and esprit de corp with bright handcoloring in watercolor. London: Thomas Mclean, August 1st, 1835. Second Edition. Etching with handcoloring in watercolor on cream wove paper. 10 1/8 x 13 3/4 inches (255 x 347 mm), uneven (full?) margins. One large bow of light-colored dampstain, extending approximately 1- inch into the platemark, but outside of the image area (unobtrusive). Minor bow of light-colored dampstaining at the lower right sheet edge, extending inwards approximately 1-inch, does not enter plate mark. Two small spots of mounting tape remnants at top sheet edge, verso. Repaired 1-inch edge tear, top left sheet edge, well outside of image area. Light handling creases and surface soil. All condition issues are consistent with age. Initially printed and published by Thomas McLean in 1816, this lovely impression is from the second and final edition. With Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo, for the first time, intercontinental travel became accessible and widespread amongst the British upper-middle class. In this time of peace, the fascination with foreign culture apexed, and learning new languages became the rage. In this visually engaging and charming image, two English tourists, festooned in the latest Parisian fashion, practice their French while standing outside the 'Hotel des Fermes' --"Commong porty wous Munseer? -- O Oui -- il est un tres belle jour!."
