London: Thomas McLean, 1835. Second Edition. Etching with hand coloring in watercolor on cream wove paper, 1835. 8 1/4 x 11 1/2 inches (250 x 354 mm), full margins. With the quote from The Corsair, A Tale, Canto I, by George Gordon Byron, printing clearly and in full below the image. Light, circular areas of dampstaining at left sheet edge recto, extending into image area approximately 1/4 inch, unobtrusive. Second area of circular dampstaining at center lower sheet edge, well outside of image area. Paper tape remnants at top right and left corners from a former mount. Colors slightly attenuated.
Second and final edition. Signed and in the plate by Cruikshank, and bearing Frederick Marryat's anchor moniker. Perhaps introduced to each other by their mutual friend, Charles Dickens, George Cruikshank and Captain Frederick Marryat became fast friends, political confidants, and artistic collaborators, working together many times over the course of their late careers. Marryat, a novelist, caricaturist and captain in the Royal Navy, first went to sea in 1806, and served throughout the Napoleonic Wars. After Napoleon’s defeat, having had a brilliant career at sea, Marryat found his Naval exercises uninspiring, and decided to resign his commission. In November 1830 he left the Royal Navy and took up writing full time. Some of Marryat’s most well loved novels include "Frank Mildmay" (1829), "Peter Simple" (1834), "Mr. Midshipman Easy" (1836), and "Japhet in Search of a Father" (1836). Marryat was also a well known author of children’s books, having penned "The Pacha of many Tales" (1836), "The Phantom Ship" (1839), "Poor Jack" (1840), "Masterman Ready" (1841), and "The Settlers in Canada" (1844). He is also known for some unrelated remarkable achievements, including having developed the first general system of flag signaling for merchant vessels (Marryat’s Code of Signals), as well as being credited with describing a previously unrecorded gastropod genus Cyclostrema with the type species Cyclostrema cancellatum, and having drawn Napoleon’s deathbed portrait. Originally issued in an oblong folio with 11 sheets and 12 hand-colored plates by Cruikshank after Marryat, this image is signed in the plate, and dated June 1820. The impression, from the second (and final) edition, was published by in London by Thomas McLean in 1835.

George Cruikshank
George Cruikshank was a British caricaturist and book illustrator praised as the modern Hogarth during his life. His book illustrations for his friend Charles Dickens, and many other authors, reached an international audience. Cruikshank was born in London. His father, Isaac Cruikshank, was one of the leading caricaturists of the late 1790s, and Cruikshank started his career as his father's apprentice and assistant. His older brother, Isaac Robert, also followed in the family business as a caricaturist and illustrator. Cruikshank's early work was a caricature, but in 1823, at the age of 31, he started to focus on book illustration. He illustrated the first, 1823 English translation (by Edgar Taylor and David Jardine) of Grimms' Fairy Tales, published in two volumes as German Popular Stories. On 16th October 1827, he married Mary Ann Walker (1807–49). Two years after her death, on 7th March 1851, he married Eliza Widdison. The two lived at 263 Hampstead Road, North London. Upon his death, it was discovered that Cruikshank had fathered 11 illegitimate children with a mistress named Adelaide Attree, his former servant, who lived close to where he lived with his wife. Adelaide was ostensibly married and had taken the married surname Archibold.

Eugene Abeshaus (also spelled Evgeny Abezgauz, Евгений Абезгауз in Russian; 1939–2008) was a Jewish artist who worked in Russia (then USSR) and Israel.
Born in Leningrad to a typical intelligentsia family, Abeshaus was educated as an electrical engineer but soon abandoned this career and enrolled in the Mukhina School for Applied Art. By the time of his graduation from the famous “Mukha” (Fly in Russian), he had already developed a critical stance towards the official Soviet art dominated by the Communist ideology and began exhibiting at semi-underground exhibitions. This was culminated by his taking part in a famous 1975 exhibition at the Nevsky Palace of Culture. Abeshaus was fired from his job and censured by the official press – which however admitted his "artistic taste, a good sense of color and form".
Soon afterwards, Abeshaus set up, together with several Jewish artists, the Alef Group and became its leader. The group’s first exhibition in November 1975 was held at Abeshauses’ small apartment. According to the Alef Manifesto written by Alek Rapoport, “We are trying to conquer the influence of small-town Jewish art and find sources for our work in deeper, wiser, and more spiritual European culture, and from it build a bridge to today and tomorrow".
