About the Item

This fascinating and lively piece instantly captures the viewer's attention. Considered an ancient symbol of power and glory, the chariot is delved with history that dates back to 2000 B.C. Braque tapped into this inherent symbolism and history as he created this exciting and eventful scene. Featuring rearing horses in flight while pulling a chariot behind them, this work is full of movement and action. Composed of curvy lines, the satirical chariot driver lacks a face but appears caught up in the chaos and action, as their hair blows back into the wind. Braque utilizes a brilliant color contrast between the shades of brown, crème, and black and frames the story in a shadow box, as if we as the viewers are looking back in time. Created in 1955, this color lithograph with hand varnish and embossing is hand signed by Georges Braque (Argenteuil-sur-Seine, 1882- Paris, 1963) in pencil in the lower right margin and numbered from the edition of 75 in pencil in the lower left. Catalogue Raisonné: This work is fully documented and referenced in the below catalogue raisonnés and texts (copies will be enclosed as added documentation with the invoices that will accompany the final sale of the work). 1. About the Framing: This work is framed to museum-grade, conservation standards, presented in a complementary moulding and optical grade Plexiglas.

Composition sur fond jaune
By Fernand Léger
Located in Palo Alto, CA
utting a new spin on one of his favorite subjects, Léger here depicts tree trunks and logs as objects in space rather than related to the ground. The gnarled branches form an abstract still-life composition, twisting and turning in unanticipated directions. The earthy browns, greens, and yellows contrast with the bold black outlines. The logs appear as though arranged on a platter, presented to the viewer for contemplation. An intriguing aspect of this piece is the tiny box...

L'efant aux biscuit (Child with Cookie)
By Pierre-Auguste Renoir
Located in Palo Alto, CA
An intimate portrait of his second son, Jean Renoir (1894 – 1979), evokes a childlike sentiment and love that Renoir had for his children. Most likely no more than age 3, Jean is shown here with a cookie, beneath a frilly bonnet characteristic of late 19th century French society. His pink, rosy cheeks are defined with rich, glowing hues that contrast from the pale yellow and grey background in which he rests. Jean was also featured in a family portrait of the Renoirs, titled La Famille de l’Artiste (1896). Created in 1899, this Color Lithograph on Cream Laid Paper is from the edition of 100, from the unpublishedL’Album d’estampes originales de la Galerie Vollard; printed by Auguste Clot, Paris. Catalogue Raisonné: It is fully documented and referenced in the below catalogue raisonnés and texts (copies will be enclosed as added documentation with the invoices that will accompany the final sale of the work): 1.
