Wonderful Etchings, Hand-watercoloured (two in the same matrix) , showing the architectures of a Royal Mosque and of the Imperial Market. From“New Scientific and Curious Dictionnary concerning the Sacred and the Profane, by Gianfrancesco Pivani, Venice, Benedetto Milocco, 1746-1751. From the Tome V, a set of 25 plates concerning “Uses and Costumes, Religious Rites of Asian people". In Perfect condition, including passepartout.
Pivati Gianfrancesco
Pivati's Nuovo dizionario is a bold contribution to Italian cultural debate in the middle of XVIII century. The wide, useful and interesting knowledge it contains is often taken from Hebrew, Greek, Latin, French, Spanish and English, as well as Italian. “The subjects treated are well researched and generally presented in a simple, direct style (…)”. Pivati’s liberal voice was out of the chorus in the context of the rigid conformity predominated troughout the Italian peninsula. “He appears to be committed to Reason and Science as opposed to simple Faith, but he tries to avoid any direct challenge to the dogmatic teachings of the Church”.

Plate from the volume “Le Temple des Muses”, published in Amsterdam in 1742 by Zacharias Chatelain. Capture (under the image) and author "B. Picart del. 1731" inscribed under the frame engraved on the lower left margin. In good conditions, except for a normal yellowing of the margins.
This was an illustrated book of Ovid's most popular fables published in 1733 in Dutch (Tempel der Zanggodinnen), in 1738 in English, and in 1742 in French by Zacharias Chatelain.
