About the Item

Original Title: Stazione V. Viene aiutato dal Cireneo a portar la Croce Beautiful sample on laid paper lacking watermark. Etching representing the fifth Station of the Passion, in which Jesus carrying the Crossis helped by a Cyrenian. Title on the plate with a brief description “Seco Gesù ciascun Fedele invita la sua Croce a portar, se uvol la vita.” on lower central margin. In excellent conditions, exceptsome minor stains and a usual diffused yellowing. Based on the series La Via Crucis, made up of sixteen branches (fourteen stations preceded by frontispiece and dedication), it is among the earliest works engraved by Giandomenico Tiepolo (Venice, 1727-1804), just about twenty years old, where he translates into etchings the namesake series of paintings realised for the oratory of the Crucifix of S. Polo’s church in Venice in 1747 commissioned by Bartolomeo Carminati. The branches began being engraved in 1748, date appended on the table of the Station IX, and they were published in 1749 as reported on the frontispiece, the only sheet on which the name of the author appears. Less than five years before (in 1742), pope Benedetto XIV urged parish priests "to enrich their churches of such a great treasure", establishing the definite number of Stations and the commemorated episode in each of them. Following the new directives, Giandomenico had to face a totally unprecedented challenge: the Via Crucis of S. Polo is the first ever accomplished in Venice. This is a new Passion of Christ. In the form of a very lively news report, Giandomenico creates scenes characterised by a strong narrative rhythm with bold framings of a picturesque crowd of spectators dressed in mid-18th-century Venetian fashion: characters in exotic costumes appear and stand out despite their irrelevance for the narrative. An inventive caprice that does not bother the composition, but rather makes the key figure of Christ, always bare and suffering, stand out in “contrast” with the opulence of the bystanders’ garments. The work, which goes through the traditional narrative of the Passion of Jesus, responds with exceptional effectiveness to the “directives” of expressing a “modern, poignant and intimate” religious emotion. This artwork is shipped from Italy.
