Harry Gottlieb
(The Catch)

1938

$400

About

Harry Gottlieb made several images of fishing communities. Here we see the boat, on shore, from it's back -- the rudder is actually showing. Three men are working in the boat on the day's catch. At the lower left, a woman, a 'fish wife,' makes a bundle to take away. The shore and boats are light colors, but the background, the sky, is quite dark. It's a hard and dangerous life. Annotated 'Printer's Proof, Harry Gottlieb,' in another hand, in the right margin. Also annotated 'Printed by A. Velonis, Graphic Div. FPA,' in ink, on the reverse. However there is no indication that this was published by the Federal Arts Project.
