About the Item

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec Etude de Femme (Study of a Woman), 1893 is a lovely depiction of a nude subject delicately undressing at her bedside. She appears as though at ease despite her vulnerable state, unaware of the somewhat voyeuristic quality of this work. In this work, Toulouse-Lautrec departs from his typical use of bold color and exciting displays of luxury, and instead opts to create a more intimate depiction of human life. The yellowish contours in the work complement the delicate blue of the woman’s bedsheets, exemplifying the artist’s expert knowledge and use of color. The viewer is drawn into the private life of the young woman, experiencing first-hand the warmth and comfort of the moment depicted. A fine impression of Wittrock’s only state, Adriani’s first state of two. From the edition of 100 printed prior to the addition of the song-sheet text to the stone, numbered “No. 78” in pencil lower left (apart form the song-sheet edition of 1893 and the edition published posthumously by Floury in 1927). Published and distributed by Edouard Kleinmann, Paris, bearing his blindstamp [Lugt 1573] in the sheet lower left. Created in 1893, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec Etude de Femme (Study of a Woman), 1893 is an Original lithograph printed in olive-green ink on wove paper, with pochoir stencil coloring added in turquoise and yellow. This work is hand-signed in pencil lower left T-Lautrec, also signed on the stone with the artist’s monogram device lower right. Inscribed “No. 78” from the edition of 100 in pencil in the lower left margin. The wife of Thadée Nathanson, the editor of the French art and literary magazine La Revue Blanche, Misia Nathanson is presented here in beautiful form. Wonderfully strong but sparse line work mixed with soft curves and billowing forms are Lautrec signatures, but what is interesting is his respect for Misia is widely apparent. A white fur shawl...

L'efant aux biscuit (Child with Cookie)
By Pierre-Auguste Renoir
Located in Palo Alto, CA
An intimate portrait of his second son, Jean Renoir (1894 – 1979), evokes a childlike sentiment and love that Renoir had for his children. Most likely no more than age 3, Jean is shown here with a cookie, beneath a frilly bonnet characteristic of late 19th century French society. His pink, rosy cheeks are defined with rich, glowing hues that contrast from the pale yellow and grey background in which he rests. Jean was also featured in a family portrait of the Renoirs, titled La Famille de l’Artiste (1896). Created in 1899, this Color Lithograph on Cream Laid Paper is from the edition of 100, from the unpublishedL’Album d’estampes originales de la Galerie Vollard; printed by Auguste Clot, Paris. Catalogue Raisonné: It is fully documented and referenced in the below catalogue raisonnés and texts (copies will be enclosed as added documentation with the invoices that will accompany the final sale of the work): 1.
