An Election Day in New Orleans is a wonderful black and white lithograph on paper, realized in 1880 by Henry Théophile Hildibrand, after a drawing from a photograph by Valnay.
Of little dimensions but very high quality and fineness, this original print represents a beautiful view of one street, an incredibly crowded street in the city of New Orleans in Louisiana during an election day. In the verso and below the engraving a part of an article titled " The Countries of the world".
In excellent conditions, this superb modern artwork realized with a wise touch and a full mastery of the technique, with the imperceptible defects of two little yellow stains on the lower margin (sign of the time) is mounted in a white cardboard passepartout, cm 30 x 24
Henri Théophile Hildibrand (Paris, 1824- Pacy-sur-Eure 1897)
The French wood engraver is one of the main interpreters of Gustave Doré and illustrator of the Hetzel and Hachette editions.
He began studing engraving in the Atelier ABL2, founded in Paris in 1832 by John Andrew, Jean Best and Isidore Leloir, to produce the Vignettes du Magasin pittoresque.
Near the engraver François Pannemaker, he became one of Gustave Doré's best engravers. In 1845, he was part of the group of engravers who composed the Mysteries of the Inquisition, and other secret societies of Spain Féréal, a highly successful book published in Paris on Boizard, which includes over 200 illustrations.
According to the Bénézit, it is present for the first time at the 1866 Salon and receives an honorable mention at the 1872 Salon.
Some of his engravings have been published in magazines such as Le Tour du monde, through many exploration writings, sometimes inspired by photographs.

Henry Théophile Hildibrand
Henri Théophile Hildibrand was born on June 19, 1824, in Paris. This French wood engraver is one of the main interpreters of Gustave Doré and illustrator of the Hetzel and Hachette editions. He began studying engraving in the Atelier ABL, founded in Paris in 1832 by John Andrew, Jean Best and Isidore Leloir, to create the Vignettes du Magasin pittoresque. In the early part of his career, he was an associate of François Pannemaker and he became one of the best-known engravers of the works of Gustave Doré. In 1845, he was part of the group of engravers who composed The Mysteries of the Inquisition, and other secret societies of Spain by Féréal, a highly successful book published in Paris by Boizard, which includes over 200 illustrations. According to the Bénézit, he exhibited for the first time at the 1866 Paris Salon and received an honorable mention at the 1872 Paris Salon. Some of his engravings have been published in magazines such as Le Tour du monde, where many of his engravings were inspired by photographs. He died on August 13, 1897, in Pacy-sur-Eure.
