About the Item

An American Depression-Era subject of African-American men playing craps by Irving Guyer.. (Craps is a game of chance that required neither skill nor strategy. The object is to predict the outcome of the roll of the two dice -- the 'bones.') Guyer was a highly skilled draftsman and keen observer of the world -- one that was severely depressed in the middle of the 1930s. And it's a New York, WPA image as well, with the stamp. It is signed and titled in pencil. The WPA stamp is in the lower left margin. NYC-WPA editions were 25 impressions. The dimensions are tricky. The image is 6 3/4 x 9 inches but the image leaves about an inch inches between the edge of the etching and the plate. The plate is actually 9 x 11 inches. Impressions of this subject are in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Schomburg Collection of the New York Public Library as well. The label showing here is from the exhibition Schomburg Collects WPA Artists, December 1, 2013 to January 4, 2014.
