About the artist:
Jakob Steinhardt was born in Zerkow, Germany in 1887. He began his studies at the School of Art in Berlin in 1906, and would later go on to study in Paris and Italy. He had the pleasure and good forture to study with many modern masters of the day including Lovis Corinth, Herman Stuck, Henri Laurens, Theophile Steinlen, and Henri Matisse.
Upon completing his education Jakob Steinhardt returned to Berlin and founded the Pathetiker (the sorrow ones), which was an artist collective of fellow expressionist painters Ludwig Meidner and Richard Janthur. Steinhardt enlisted in the army during WWI as a war artist, depicting scenes from the front.
Jakob Steinhardt is most known for his woodcuts depicting biblical and Jewish subjects. These woodcuts were masterful in the emotion they evoke of lost Jewish cultures. Steinhardt worked in the fashion after immigrating to Palestine in 1933. He became a member of the Bezalel school group and would go on to found his own art school in Jerusalem.
Steinhardt became the chairman of the Graphics Department at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in 1948. He would also serve as head of the school from 1953 to 1957. The artist was recognized during his career receiving the International prize in graphic art at the 1955 Sau Paulo Biennale and later the liturgical award for woodcuts at the 1960 Venice Biennale.

Between the years of 1942 and 1944, the Germans occupied Paris. He and his family were forced to live in solitary confinement with the constant fear of being discovered. The only things that kept Tobiasse going was his drawings. By the time it was safe to come out of hiding, he had quite a portfolio put together.
In 1960, his work was noticed at an exhibition of young artists at the Palais de la Mediterranee in Nice and he won first prize. From then on art galleries and collectors continued to show interest in his work, and by 1962 Theo Tobiasse was finally able to devote himself entirely to painting. Rare French, Paris 1935 Judaica Oil Painting Rabbis Studying S. Fleischman
Located in Surfside, FL
Rare Judaica Art. Jewish genre scene. In the tradition of Moritz Oppenheim, Isidor Kauffman and Maurycy Gottlieb and later of Tully Filmus, Zalman Kleinman and Itshak Holtz the artist captures this Jewish scene with a particular sensitivity. Part of the Ecole De Paris The term "School of Paris" was used in 1925 by André Warnod (fr) to refer to the many foreign-born artists who had migrated to Paris.
School of Paris artists were progressively marginalized. Beginning in 1935 art publications no longer wrote about Marc Chagall, just magazines for Jewish audiences, and by June 1940 when the Vichy government took power, School of Paris artists could no longer exhibit in Paris at all.
The artists working in Paris between World War I and World War II experimented with various styles including Cubism, Orphism, Surrealism and Dada. Foreign and French artists working in Paris included Jean Arp, Joan Miró, Constantin Brâncuși, Raoul Dufy, Tsuguharu Foujita, artists from Belarus like Michel Kikoine, Pinchus Kremegne, and Jacques Lipchitz, the Polish artist Marek Szwarc and others such as Russian-born prince Alexis Arapoff. A significant subset, the Jewish artists, came to be known as the Jewish School of Paris or the School of Montparnasse. The "core members were almost all Jews, and the resentment expressed toward them by French critics in the 1930s was unquestionably fueled by anti-Semitism." One account points to the 1924 Salon des Indépendants, which decided to separate the works of French-born artists from those by immigrants; in response critic Roger Allard (fr) referred to them as the School of Paris. Jewish members of the group included Emmanuel Mané-Katz, Chaim Soutine, Adolphe Féder, Chagall, Moïse Kisling, Maxa Nordau...
