About the Item

Victorian-style drypoint etching by James Dobie (British, 1849-1911), after a painting by Walter Dendy Sadler. Printed in London by J. Brooker & Co. and hand colored. The scene depicts two people engaged in a dispute entitled, "A Breach of Promise (A sure case)," while sat at a lawyer's desk. Wonderful detail in the law office décor with a mantel clock above the fireplace surrounded by disheveled books and paperwork to the ceiling. Presented in cream-colored mat and a black and giltwood frame. Frame size: 21.25”H x 26”W Image size: 15”H x 19.5”W James Dobie (1849-1923) was an Edinburgh-born etcher. Details of any art education are not known but it is very unlikely that he was self-taught. He exhibited at the Royal Academy in London where he appears to have spent most of his adult life. Some authorities suggest he died in 1911. However, his last exhibit was at the RA in 1923. He married in Dalston, London in 1888 and the census of 1881 records him as a visitor in the house of Victor Gustave L'Huiller, (1844-1889) in Hastings, Sussex. In 1901, he was recorded as a Copperplate etcher and he made etchings of paintings by Frank Bramley, Frederick Hall, Walter Langley, Dendy Sadler, and others. An etching entitled 'Fishing Boats at Hastings' from 1882 is in the collection of Penlee House Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum and others are in the British Museum.
