About the Item

TISSOT, JAMES JACQUES JOSEPH (1836 - 1902) "Le Portique de la Galerie Nationale a Londres" (The Portico of the National Gallery, London) Wentworth 40 Etching and Drypoint on imitation Japanese paper, C. 1878 Only state published, from the edition of 100 Signed 1878 J.J. Tissot on the step, lower right 14 7/8” x 8 1/4” Excellent crisp impression This etching is related to the painting London Visitors exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1874, no. 116. The setting is the portico of the National Gallery, looking toward the Church of St. Martin’s-in-the-Fields. Such works give Tissot a minor but distinguished position as a predecessor of the school of architectural etchers founded on the style of Whistler’s Thames and Venice etchings. This etching was exhibited at the Grosveror Gallery, 1879. Tissot was born in Nantes, France. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1857 where he made friends with Degas, Whistler, and the writer Dauder. He exhibited a Late Romantic style historical painting for the first time at the Salon in 1859. Being influenced by Manet, when he went to London and exhibited at the Royal Academy in the years of 1863/64, he began to use Impressionist techniques of colour and composition. He made great success with his anecdotal and detailed pictures, which was also influenced by the Japanese style of painting. He emigrated to England in 1871, and returned to Paris in 1882. He had finished a series of 15 pictures of typical Parisian women during the years of 1883-1885 In 1888 he underwent a religious conversion when he went into a church to ‘catch the atmosphere for a picture’, and thereafter he devoted himself to biblical subjects. He visited the Holy Land in 1886-87 and in 1889, and his illustrations to the events of the Bible became very popular, both in book form and when the original drawings were exhibited. A gold medal was awarded to him at the World Fair in Paris in 1889. He died at Chateau-de-Buillon in 1902.

  • "Sculpteur au Travail" from Sable Mouvant by Pablo Picasso, 1964
    By Pablo Picasso
    Located in Hinsdale, IL
PICASSO, PABLO (1881 – 1973) "Sculpteur au Travail; from Sable Mouvant" Bloch 1183, Baer 1152 Etching and aquatint on tissue-thin japon paper c. 1964 Bearing a watermark “LB – Louis Broder” Signed in Pencil, lower right numbered X/XX, from the edition of 20 in Roman numerals on Japanese paper (there was also the edition of 50 in Arabic numerals on Japanese paper; the edition of 10 in Roman numerals on Auvergne wove paper; and the book edition of 255). Printed by Atelier Crommelynck, Paris Plate Size: 15.187” x 10.875”, Sheet Size: 21” x 16.18”. Published by Louis Broder Picasso illustrated these etching and aquatints as homage to the fascinating poem by Pierre Reverdy. Sable Mouvant (quicksand) is set in the desert and relates to a number of psychological struggles and hallucinations. The works by Picasso elegantly depict Reverdy’s intentions and remove the viewer from reality to expose the inner turmoil of a helpless man and his surroundings. Pablo Picasso was born in Malaga, Spain on October 25, 1881. By the age of 15 he was already technically skilled in drawing and painting. Picasso’s highly original style continuously evolved throughout his long career, expanding the definition of what art could be. In addition to painting, he would explore sculpture, ceramics and other art forms, and become one of the most influential artists of the 1900s. Paintings from Picasso’s blue period (1901-1904) depict forlorn people painted in shades of blue, evoking feelings of sadness and alienation. After his move to Paris in 1904, Picasso’s rose...
